My gaze bounced between them. Carla’s mouth pinched into a firm line and Savage appeared grim.

“It’s bad, isn’t it?” I blurted out.

“A dead body is never good,” Savage stated. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a cell phone. He pressed the screen and put the phone to his ear. After a moment, he said, “Hey, brother. I need Ghost. Yeah, and bring Viper. I’m at Carla’s.” He paused and then said, “Thanks. See you.”

He hung up and shoved his phone back into his pocket.

“You got anything of value in that trailer?” Savage asked. “Paperwork? Any sentimental shit?”

I frowned. “No. Well, I guess maybe some clothes and my pistol. It’s in my nightstand drawer.”

“Doesn’t do you any good in your nightstand drawer,” Savage drawled. “Though you made short work of that guy with a skillet.”

“Short work,” I repeated. “Yeah, I guess I did.”

He nodded. “You got insurance on the trailer?”

“Yeah.”

His grin was wild. “Good.”

“Good? Why’s that good?”

“Because tonight we’re burning that fucker to the ground.”

Chapter2

“Get cleaned up.I’ll pack some of your clothes and bring them to you, yeah?”

I nodded at Savage.

Carla had been leaning against the counter. She pushed away from it and walked toward the sink. She crouched down, opened the cabinet, and pulled out a garbage bag.

“Bathroom,” Carla instructed. “Now.”

I took a few steps, but not before I saw Carla move close to Savage. He said something to her and then cupped her cheek before leaning down and kissing her lips.

Carla’s bathroom was bigger than mine. Nicer too.

And here I was about to soil it.

As I stood alone, I looked in the mirror. It was a miracle Carla hadn’t screamed when she saw me.

My face was spattered with blood and there was a chunk of brain in my hair. I looked like an ancient warrior princess who had just butchered one of her enemies.

Carla knocked on the bathroom door but didn’t wait for a reply. She came into the room and closed the door behind her. “Strip,” she commanded and then opened the garbage bag.

I pulled my T-shirt over my head and threw it away. I wasn’t wearing a bra, but it didn’t matter. Neither of us were shy.

I kicked off my flip-flops.

“Those too,” she stated. “Everything you’re wearing goes in here.”

With a sigh, I leaned over and scooped up my shoes and threw them in the bag as well. I did the same with my leggings and underwear.

I turned on the shower and let it begin to steam before stepping in. I slid the curtain closed, tilted my head up, and let the water bathe my face and rinse the blood from my skin.

“You still in here?” I asked as I brushed the water from my eyes.
