“Apparently,” I said with a rueful smile. “I don’t think he realized it until he said it. Are you guys gossiping about it in there?”

“Damn right we are.”

I grinned. “I love that you have zero shame over it.”

“What about you?”

“What about me, what?”

“Is Viper just a piece of tail for you?”

“Viper and I have an understanding,” I said. “When I move out of here, our relationship, or whatever this is, is over. Done.”

“Hard to be done when there are real feelings involved.”

“According to Viper, feelings are bullshit. I’m inclined to agree.”

“Ah, another one who’s emotionally stunted. Have I seen you at the meetings?”

I sniggered and bumped against him. “Is that why you’re so go-with-the-flow when it comes to Carla?”

“We’re not talking about me and Carla. We’re talking about you and Viper.”

“Can I ask you something? I mean, really ask you something, and have you give me an honest answer?”

“Sure.”

“It stays between us, okay?”

“Okay.”

“I mean it. Your gossipy lips need to be sealed.”

“I swear. Now what’s on your mind?”

“Do you think it’s weird? I mean, Viper and I hardly know each other, but we have this rhythm. It’s easy, you know?”

“Easy? With Viper? I don’t believe it.”

“Okay, noteasy. But his attitude doesn’t scare me. His surliness isn’t a turn off. I get the feeling…”

“What?”

“He’s lonely,” I said softly. “Like, deeply lonely. And even though he’s part of this club, it’s still easier for him to keep himself separate, so he doesn’t have to deal with all the stuff that comes with really being a part of something.”

“Hmm. I’m not what you call sensitive, and I know jack all about psychology, but it sounds to me like you’re doing this thing calledprojecting.”

“Projecting? What the hell does that mean?”

“It means you’re putting what you feel all onto Viper. You keep yourself separate so you don’t have to deal with the consequences of really letting someone in.” He shrugged.

“Huh. Not sure how I feel about your assessment. I’m going to choose to ignore the potential insight and mash down any sort of thoughts on the matter.”

“Hey, that’s how I live my life. It works pretty well.” He smiled.

“You’re a good egg, Savage,” I said. “Thanks for shooting the shit with me.”

“Happy to shoot shit any time,” he said.
