“It was particular.”

“Should it not have been particular?” I asked.

He shrugged.

“What’s that mean? Your shrug?”

“Just never saw anyone be so particular about their pie and ice cream combination.”

“Have youhadvanilla bean ice cream?” I asked.

“Do I look like a man who eats vanilla bean ice cream?”

I couldn’t stop the full smile from drifting across my face. “No. Then again, you don’t look like you eat ice cream at all. In fact, you don’t look like you do anything for the pure sake of enjoyment.”

“I fuck for the pure sake of enjoyment.”

My eyes widened and my mouth suddenly went dry as I pictured a naked Viper in the throes of sweaty, heated passion.

“And she’s finally quiet,” he growled.

My cheeks warmed, and I changed the subject. “You still haven’t answered my question about the phone.”

The waitress returned, carrying a tray. She set down our coffees and a creamer. She placed the pie in the center of the table with two spoons.

She winked at me. “Thought you might want to share, this being a first date and all.”

I grasped the plate and pulled it toward me. “He hasn’t earned that right yet. Pie is pie, and I don’t share.”

The waitress chuckled. “Anything else for you?”

I shook my head.

“You got strawberry?” Viper asked.

“Strawberry what?” the waitress queried.

“Ice cream.”

“Yep.”

“Can I get a scoop of that?” He looked at me. “Please.”

“You got it.”

“So, you like strawberry ice cream,” I said once the waitress left. “Who’d have thunk it?” I took a bite of the pie and let out a satisfied sigh.

“Your friend is gonna call you in a few minutes,” Viper said. “Everything’s gotta look a certain way. If you’re not there when shit goes down, there won’t be any questions.”

“Oh. What about the, ah, problem in my kitchen?”

“We got a guy who cleans up these kinds of messes. You don’t need to worry about it. The club is going to sort this out. We’ll fill you in later, but for now, just act surprised when you get the call.”

Reality came crashing back. I’d forgotten for a brief moment why I was at a diner with Viper in the first place.

The sweet peaches were suddenly too sugary, and the pie crust wasn’t buttery. I pushed the plate away.

“Something wrong with the pie, honey?” the waitress asked as she set a scoop of ice cream in front of Viper.
