“How’s the food?” Duke asked me.

“Perfect,” I said even though I hadn’t yet tasted it.

Savage, Acid, and Duke carried on a conversation, but it was dude-centric. Motorcycles, the garage the club owned, and other things I had no interest in. Viper was quiet, not contributing much to their conversation.

I stole a hand across his back and then picked up my fork.

As I took a bite, I noticed that Willa was staring at me with raised brows.

I couldn’t remember the last time I’d sat around a table with a group of people and just felt normal.

But I wasn’t normal. I didn’t make friends the way a lot of people did. I wouldn’t call myself closed off, but I kept things light. Easy. My relationships were very surface level. I hadn’t thought there was anything wrong with that until now.

The way these people interacted with one another was easy, carefree, but it was clear they knew each other well. They joked and teased. There were no boundaries. When Savage got up from the table for a few seconds, he brought Willa another ginger ale without her even asking. And when he sat back down, Duke took one of the cornbread biscuits right off of Savage’s plate.

The three of them really were close, almost like they were a single unit.

It was beautiful.

Foreign.

Once I was stuffed, I pushed my empty plate away and sighed in happiness.

“Props,” Savage said to me. “I didn’t think you’d finish all that food in one sitting.”

“It’s gremlin energy,” I teased.

“You want to leave the guys to their man-talk and get a tour of the house?” Willa asked me.

“Love to,” I said.

Viper’s hand slid from my thigh before I stood up.

“You finished?” I asked him.

He nodded.

I took our plates and carted them to the dishwasher.

“Leave them in the sink,” Willa said. “The kids will do them.”

“The kids,” I snorted. “They’re teenagers, right?”

“Still kids. Still have curfews. Still living under my roof. So they have chores.”

“They don’t really live under our roof,” Duke said as he brought his plate to the sink. “Waverly and Sailor share the guesthouse.”

“You must trust your sisters a lot to let them share a guesthouse without any parental supervision.”

“It’s a unique situation,” Willa said. “I’ll explain later.”

“Fire pit?” Duke asked Willa.

She smiled. “Sounds good. We’ll meet you out there once I give Sutton the tour.” Willa leaned in and pressed her lips to Duke’s. He grasped the back of her neck and gave her a real kiss, and I discreetly turned away.

Viper was looking at me and something inexplicable moved between us. Something I didn’t want to explore.

I was all too eager to follow Willa out of the kitchen, down the hallway.
