I nodded slightly. “Okay.”

“Good night, everyone.” She glowered at her husband and then marched into the house.

“What just happened?” I asked Duke. “And how do you seem to know about my situation?”

“All the brothers know,” Viper said, answering in lieu of Duke. “They had to know. The Old Ladies, though. They aren’t privy to what went down.”

“What you got involved in is dangerous enough that they had to tell us,” Duke said. “We can’t have you around the brothers unless they’re prepared to protect you no matter where you are, but we try to keep things from our women as much as possible. Willa knows that.”

“Then why is she so mad?”

“She doesn’t like being left out of the loop—especially when sheknowsthere’s something going on.”

“So you don’t let women in on club business, whatever that is?” I asked.

“Need to know basis,” Duke said. “If there’s shit that they need to know, we tell them. But we try to protect them—shield them—from it, as best we can. Doesn’t always work, but that’s the life.”

“I’m sorry I upset her.”

“You didn’t. I did,” Duke replied. “The three of us know what’s going on. She doesn’t. She doesn’t like feeling left out.”

“But she is left out,” I said.

“Absolutely.”

“Why don’t you just tell her?” I asked.

“You need to trust us on this. You don’t want people knowing your business, or why you had to come to the club,” Duke said. “Aside from a legal standpoint, it’s a shit idea, blabbing about stuff like that. Never ends well.”

I sighed. “Yeah, okay, I get the point.”

“She knows what she signed up for when she became my Old Lady. She might not like it all the time, but that’s how we are. It’s better this way. Trust me.”

Chapter22

Viper’s phonechimed right as we got to his motorcycle. He pulled out his cell from his leather cut and glanced at the screen. “Duke texted me Willa’s number to give to you.”

“Thanks,” I said. “Can I have that now?”

“Why can’t you wait until we get back to the clubhouse to put it into your phone?”

“Why can’t I have it now?”

Shrugging, he told me her number and I punched it into my cell. After I saved it, I called her.

“Hello?” she answered.

“Hi, it’s Sutton.”

Viper was staring at me, a frown on his face.

“Oh, hey.”

“Sorry things got weird,” I blurted out.

She paused a moment and then laughed. “No,I’msorry things got weird. It was my fault.”

“Why don’t we just blame the men for making it weird?” I asked, flashing a grin at Viper, who was definitely not amused.
