KATE

The door opens with a soft creak as I walk inside my house and stop dead in my tracks.

Blake’s munching on cinnamon toast, Mia’s making a pot of coffee, and Ash is pouring herself a bowl of cereal.

With a grin, Blake greets me. “Look who finally came home.”

“Hi, guys.” I close the front door, keeping the cold out.

“We were worried about you,” Ash tells me.

“I know I should’ve texted to tell you I wouldn’t be home. I’m sorry.”

“No worries,” Ash replies.

“So, where were you?” Blakely quizzes me.

My gaze narrows. I’m well aware of the game she’s playing. But the girl doesn’t cower. She stares back at me, daring me to admit the truth.

And, like a stack of cards, I fold almost instantly. “I was with Mack.”

“Oh?” Ash exchanges a knowing look with the rest of the girls.

“Yup.” I hook my thumb over my shoulder. “I should probably get ready for work. So…”

“Uh-uh. No deal. You think we’re gonna let you off the hook so easily?” Mia laughs and adds some half-and-half to her Snoopy mug. “Come on. You should know us better than that by now.”

With a groan, I slip my backpack off my shoulder and set it by my feet, keeping the sack of goodies in my hand. If I don’t, they’ll sniff them out like a bunch of bloodhounds and steal the chocolate for themselves.

“Fine,” I grumble, dragging my feet. “Let’s get it over with.”

Three pairs of eyes light up as Blake grabs the kitchen chair beside hers and shoves it away from the table. “Take a seat.”

I collapse onto the wooden chair and fold my arms, bracing myself for the inevitable with the bag of snacks pressed to my chest.

“So, what’d you guys do?” Mia starts the inquisition.

“We hung out. He made me soup. Then we…” ––I clear my throat––“watched a documentary.”

“I’m sorry, you”––Blake fake coughs, mimicking me––“what’s that code for?”

“It means they totally had sex,” Mia announces shamelessly.

“Shut up.” Ash’s spoon clatters in her bowl. “You did?”

My nose scrunches, and I squeeze my eyes shut. “Maybe?”

Blake laughs even harder. “Yeah, they totally did it.” Raising her hand, she offers Ash a high-five, and I roll my eyes.

“Are you serious right now?” I yell.

“Come on! Don’t leave me hanging!” Blake pleads to Ash.

Ash’s lips purse, but she gives into Blake’s antics, slapping her palm against Blake’s raised hand in a half-assed high-five so Blake will leave me alone. Then, she turns back to me. “And? What happened? Obviously, you slept over…”

“Yeah.” I deflate more into the seat, my stomach knotting at the memory, no matter how sweet Mack was this morning. “And then, I almost died of embarrassment.”

“What happened?” Ash prods, her cereal forgotten.
