“Ibetterbe,” she replies.

I smirk, hearing the determination in her voice.

“Speaking of meddling, how’s the dating life?” she prods.

“Fine,” I lie as I pick up a lime and examine it, putting it back where it came from.

“Oh, yeah?” she challenges. “So you’re bringing a date tonight?”

“Can’t come, Blake.” I snag a paper bag of Honeycrisp apples and a bunch of bananas, stacking them into the cart. “Sorry.”

“Oh, come on,” she whines. “It’ll be fun! Mia even convinced her manager at SeaBird to let me in as long as I wear an orange wristband so no one serves me.”

“That’s supposed to be on the down-low, remember?” Theo mutters.

“Aren’t you supposed to have a fake ID or something so you can get into the bar like a normal college student?” I ask.

Blake cuts off Theo’s groan, her voice thick with snark. “Ihada fake ID, butsomeonethrew me under the bus before we were officially dating, and now, I’ve been flagged.”

“I’ve already apologized,” Theo reminds her.

“Not enough,” she informs him. “Anywho, I still say you should come.”

Reaching for a couple heads of broccoli, I slip them into my cart and mutter, “I dunno. SeaBird’s usually packed with college kids, and––”

“Is there something wrong with college kids?” Blake interrupts.

I smile and shake my head, despite knowing she can’t see me. The girl’s so damn spicy I can’t help it. No wonder Theo pokes at her like he does. “Nothing wrong with them, Blake. They make me feel old, is all.”

“Come on. You’re not old,” she argues.

“When I’m surrounded by kids closer to my daughter’s age than my own? Yeah, it makes me feel old.”

“There’s nothing wrong with dating a younger woman. Right, Teddy?”

“Nothing at all,” he returns, and lip-smacking sounds through the speaker. My nose wrinkles, and I fight the urge to hang up until Theo adds, “You just gotta find the right one.”

“Yeah.” I pick up some cheese from the back of the store and make my way toward the frozen section. “I’ll be sure to do that.”

“We only want to see you happy,” Blake chirps.

“You sure you haven’t talked to Mama Taylor?” I question, but Blake barrels on.

“Even if it’s just a friend for you to hang out with. You need someone who shares your same interests. Someone you can open up to and talk with about your day. It doesn’t even have to be about sex or anything. Mack, all we’re saying is…find a friend.”

“Yeah, I hear you loud and clear.” My attention catches on a familiar face in the frozen section, and I pause.

Speaking of sex…

I haven’t talked to Kate since our run-in at the gym, and I’m still reeling from it. I probably shouldn’t have told her I had a hard-on, but she was so ashamed of her leggings I couldn’t help it. I had to take the attention away from her and her lacy black underwear.

Fuck, her underwear.

I almost groan as the memory rises to the surface before shoving it away.

Because Blake’s right.

I could use a friend.
