I shook my head, even though he wasn’t looking at me. I didn’t want to wait. I needed to know now.

The moment he parked the car, I reached out, curled my fingers around his arm, and asked, “What is it?”

Despair was written all over his face. Oh, no. This was going to be worse than I thought, but I didn’t know how that was possible. I mean, I was here with Kane, so it couldn’t bethatbad, right?

He studied me for so long, and I grew too impatient. “Kane?” I said, my voice pleading with his.

“It’s Ainsley.”

My sister.

Oh, God.

In an instant, I felt sick. Then, no matter that I was sitting down, I felt dizzy.

That was all I remembered before the rest of the world faded away.

NINETEEN

Ellery

“Ellery.”

At the sound of Kane’s voice, my eyes fluttered open. I didn’t recognize where I was, but that’s when it suddenly came back to me.

My sister.

Something happened to my sister.

“Ellery,” Kane repeated, his handsome face filling my vision. “Can you hear me?”

I had to get up. I had to figure out what had happened to my sister.

The moment I started to move, Kane put his hands on me and said, “Take it easy.”

“Ainsley,” I returned, hoping he understood my concern.

Sadness washed over him, and I braced myself for the worst. But before I could ask him anything, I noticed movement out of the corner of my eye.

Leo was there.

So were Avalon and two other guys I didn’t recognize. I could only assume they were other Harper Security Ops employees, but if they were, I hadn’t met them yet.

Seeing everyone else there, I only felt myself grow more and more tense. If the worst had happened to my sister, if she’d been hurt in any way, I’d never forgive myself.

“What happened?” I asked.

“I think you passed out from the shock,” Kane returned, holding some water out to me.

I shook my head. “No, I mean, what happened to my sister?”

“Drink this first,” he urged me.

“But—”

“Drink it, and I’ll tell you what’s going on,” he instructed.

Kane had been firm with me when we were training, but he’d never spoken in such a way that I felt as though he’d been ordering me around. Right now, he didn’t have the same gentle tone, and while I knew he was probably only doing what was best for me, considering I’d just passed out, it came as an unexpected order.
