I stay at least three cars behind him, knowing if I get too close he’ll see me.

Forty minutes later I’m across the water in Brooklyn and still tailing him. I look into my rearview to check that my team are right behind me. I see both cars, then I catch a glimpse of Killian’s car right behind them. I relax knowing that I’m not alone. We follow the car as it makes a left then another left. But as I round the second left into a scrap yard I realise the car isn’t in front of me. Pulling my car to a stop, I get out and walk back to the first car with half of my security team inside including Dan. “Drive around, find them.” They give me a nod and take off in search of Vincenzo. I make my way over to Killian’s car and climb into the back behind him and next to Ronan, Finn up front in the passenger seat.

“Do you know who he’s with?” Killian asks over his shoulder.

“Nah. I couldn’t get a good look at the driver. I just saw the fucker get in the car.” We sit in the car for fifteen minutes until our guys come back. Dan gets out of the main car and walks to us stopping at the driver's side. Kill rolls down his window allowing Dan to lean in.

“Sorry guys, there’s no sign of the car or Vincenzo anywhere. We’ve checked every inch of this yard. We’ve lost them. I’m sorry.”

“Fuck.” I tip my head back. This is fucking frustrating.

“Thanks Dan. Round up the rest of the team and let’s go.” Killian gives him a nod and rolls up his window.

“I gotta go get Alex. I’ll see you guys at Ma’s later.” I get out of the car and head back to mine. I hear a door close and look behind me to see that Finn is following me. “What’s up?”

“Killian is heading back to his and dropping Ronan off they are in the opposite direction. Figured it was easier to get a ride with you. If that’s ok?”

“Yeah. Of course. Hop in.”

We pull up outside Finn’s house nearly an hour later. “Con?”

“Yeah?” I turn to face my baby brother.

“Are you worried?”

“About?”

“The women? I know that we had Maxim’s guys pick everyone up but what if we’ve missed someone? What if Brent and Martin didn’t know exactly who was betraying us.”

I grab onto Finn’s arm. “Take a breath baby brother. We can only grab up those we know are definitely betraying us. We’ve done that. They are all tucked up nicely in the warehouse. And if we have missed anyone, then the woman are all well protected. Don’t worry so much, it will give you wrinkles.” I give him a wink.

He chuckles giving me a nod as he gets out of the car. I sit and watch him walk through his front door. I don’t want him to worry but the truth is he’s right. We have no way of knowing if we have picked everyone up. We have no way of knowing if there are any more of our men betraying us. But I don’t want Finn worrying anymore that he has to. There’s no sense in us all being quivering stress heads.

“Angel?”

“I’m up here.”

Heading up the stairs I find my woman in our bedroom curling her hair. Walking over to her I wrap my arms around her and place a kiss on the cheek she doesn’t have her curlers next to.

“Did you catch him?” I hear the nerves in her voice. I look at her in the mirror and shake my head. I see the sadness in her eyes.

“You’re safe baby. I’ll always keep you safe.”

She finishes her last curl then turns off her curlers and places them on the dresser, turning in my arms to face me. “I know you will baby. I just wish this was over with. I hate worrying every time you leave the house.”

“Soon Angel. I promise.”

I pull her into me and kiss her. It has to be over soon. The fear that something might happen to her or I might lose her cripples me more often than I’d like to admit.

Chapter 26

My head pounds, and I blink trying to clear away the fogginess. I struggle to focus on the room, the pain in my head forcing me to close my eyes once again.

I don’t know how long I was out for. I can’t open my eyes, but I can hear muffled voices. They sound like they are underwater, or maybe I’m underwater. I try to move, but my entire body hurts. Why the hell do I hurt so much and where the hell am I? I feel confused and sore. My head pounds and I feel sleepy, I try to fight it, but I can feel the darkness consume me, and only a few seconds later it's claimed me once again.

I wake again a little later, I can’t hear anything this time. No traffic, no birds, no talking, not even a creaky floorboard. Nothing but silence. I feel a little more with it now though. My entire body hurts and this time I know why. I remember the fight on the stairs then being pushed down them and then someone grabbing my arm just before I blacked out.
