The office is still the same as it was when we first moved in and decorated, low lighting, dark furniture, and a tan sofa on the wall as you walk in. The only changes that have been made are the wall of security monitors, they were replaced after the place was trashed right before Finn was taken.

And Rory’s corner, or should I say Finn’s now. He hates working there, and only does it when he can’t do what he needs from his laptop. Although now that he has Cara and Lennon, he’s had his home office set up with most of the equipment he needs. He only works from here when we need him to. But that doesn’t feel like his space. We’ve told him to change it, hell even Rory wrote it in his letter. But Finn feels like he’s disrespecting the memory of Rory if he changes the space.

I turn to find Connor watching me, “maybe we should re-decorate in here.”

“What?”

“I was just thinking, Finn will never freely change up his work area in here, so maybe we should re-decorate the entire office. I don’t want anyone to feel like I’m trying to rid the place of Rory, but I think it’s time we had a new space. It’s time for a change.”

We both turn our heads as one of the barmen, I have no idea of his name brings in two cups of coffee and places them on each of our desks. He gives us both a small nod and then closes the door as he leaves. I look down at my cup and wrinkle my nose, I can smell how strong it is. I like coffee, but I hate that bitter taste you get when it’s just too strong. I think I’m the only one in my family who likes it weak, and they all take the piss out of me for it.

Connor scoffs a laugh, then takes a drink and smirks at me. “I agree about the office, we should change it up. We should ask Cara to take a look, she seems to have a good eye for shit like that.” I nod agreeing with him. Thinking we’re done talking I turn back to my laptop, checking over the plans again. After all of the trouble we’ve had I want to make sure everything is in place without any room for error or trouble.

“Kill?” Connor calls out getting my attention.

“What?”

“Two things. One, you look like shit. And two… you were meant to wait at your place for me to get there this morning, I dropped Alex off as planned but when I got there Bella told me you had left an hour before that. The whole point of us travelling in pairs is to increase the security around us. Not only did you leave without me, but you didn’t even take half of your team with you, you left them at the house.”

I let out a sigh and look at Connor, “I didn’t really get much sleep, I figured I’d get a jump on checking the inventory. I left the team there to ensure Bella was safe. I can take care of myself…”

“For fucks sake Kill.” He slams his hand down on the desk. “You’re the one that set this up, you’re the one that said we needed to travel in pairs. You can’t just go off half-cocked. What the fuck is wrong with you?”

I drop my head into my hands, giving myself a minute before responding. “I just needed a minute to breathe brother. Just one minute alone. I’m sorry ok. I know I should have waited.”

Connor gets up from his seat and makes his way over to me, placing a hand on my shoulder I look up at him. “Then I’ll give you that minute. I’ll go work in the bar, to give the room you need to breathe.” Connor grabs his laptop and his coffee, I feel like shit knowing he’s going out there for me. I think about saying something to him, when he stops at the door, “Rory was right when he said they you were born to lead this Syndicate, he was right when he said it was yours and our paths would run alongside yours. But that doesn’t mean you have to take it all. It doesn’t mean that you can’t talk to us.

“We’re brothers Kill, family. None of us are alone on our journeys and we’d do well to remember that. When you’re ready to talk, we’ll be ready to listen.” Without another word he leaves gently closing the door behind him.

Four hours later and I’ve done everything I need to do. I’m just closing my laptop when Finn and Ronan come through the door closely followed by Connor. I’m instantly on alert, I can sense both of their demons battling for control. The rage coming off them in waves.

“What?”

“Seamus is on his way back to Ireland as we speak.” Finn paces as he talks, his anger palpable. Connor moves toward his desk, confused but alert. We both look to Ronan his body rigid his face a stone-cold mask.

“Finn. Calm down and take a breath. Tell us what’s going on?”

“Calm down and take a breath Killian. Calm the fuck down and take a fucking breath? I’m barely holding it together. That piece of shit Carrera… no longer has his sights set on Cara. He’s fucking moved on from her. He’s not just moved on from her he’s moved on to another fucking victim, last night he took Caitriona O’Shea from her fucking bed. She’s eighteen years old brother, she’s a baby. He had his fucking men break into her house, murder her mother and sixteen-year-old brother while they slept then took her. Her older brother Keefe is a soldier in the O’Malley Clan. They called Seamus this morning after his Da refused to go after her.”

“What the fuck…” Connor slumps onto the seat. His face was white as a sheet. He out of all of us knows what it’s like to have the one you love taken from you. We need to do something, we need to help, looking back up at my baby brother, “Finn…”

“Brian O’Malley refused to go after her. You know what he told Keefe, ‘sorry kid, your sister is gone, there’s nothing we can do you’re just going to have to accept it’. Seamus is going back to Ireland he’s gathering up his Clan to go after her, and then he’s coming home to overthrow his Da. Kill…”

“No, I know you’re going to tell me you want to go, but the answer is no. You have a wife and child. You all have family. I’m calling André to see if he can help. Grab a whiskey, take a seat and calm the fuck down. We need to keep our heads in the game.”

Grabbing my phone I dial André, while swallowing down the bile that’s rising in my throat. It’s time we took out this Carrera fucker.

Chapter 10

I’m glad I agreed to finally move in with Killian. But I can’t help thinking he’s regretting asking me already and it’s only been one night. He said he was ok this morning, but he doesn’t realise that I was awake almost as much as he was last night. I know when he’s asleep and last night he barely got any. I even asked him this morning if he got much sleep and he lied, told me he slept like a dream, then he left for work two hours before Connor arrived with Alex. He was pissed when he realised that Killian had already left without him and left half of his security behind.

It’s been nice having Alex work from here with me today, she was a welcome distraction to my thoughts this morning. But she went in the front room to work so I could make some work calls and now they are finished I can’t help but worry about Killian and me.

I’ve pushed so hard to keep my own independence maybe we can’t actually live together. Maybe suddenly having me in his space and knowing it’s going to be forever has him finally realising that it’s not what he wants. I need to talk to him and sooner rather than later. We need to do this before I move everything out of my apartment.

I hear the doorbell go just as my phone starts to ring. Checking the caller ID, I realise I’d forgotten I’d promised to call a potential new client today, shit. I can hear Maddie telling off one of the security guys for some unknown reason, and I chuckle as I answer the phone.
