“Dunno,” he said. “When was he killed?”
“March 13,” Michael said. “Monday.”
“I was working Monday,” he said. “Same restroom.”
“Did anyone approach you in regard to your other business?” Michael asked.
Presley reached up and scratched his head. “Man, I can’t tell you that,” he whined. “If I rat on people, I could lose my business.”
“One might advise you to lose your business anyway,” Faith said drily.
Presley shrugged. “Man, you know how it is. I make minimum wage handing people paper towels. Half of them don’t even wash their hands and none of them tip. I have rent to pay, you know? Bills and food and—”
“Yeah, we get it,” Michael said, “but you need to answer our questions anyway.”
Presley sighed. “Yeah, a few.”
“Did you recognize any of them?”
“Of course, I recognized them, man. I don’t sell to people I don’t know. That’s a good way to get caught.”
“And look where you are now,” Faith said.
Presley met her yes. “There’s worse places to be.”
Faith nodded. “Fair enough.”
“Who did you sell to on Monday?”
“Man, I already told you. I can’t tell you.”
“And I already told you. You’re looking at being charged with murder, Leon. You’re looking real good. Now, let’s say we’re wrong and you get off the murder charge. You think the prosecution is going to let you off the hook for drugs too?”
Presley hung his head and sniffled. “Yeah, okay,” he said softly. “Um, there was Betty. I don’t know for sure if that’s her real name, that’s just the name she gives me.”
“Besides Betty, who else?”
“Um, there’s Rodney, Aroldis, and Fern.”
“Aroldis is a male or female?”
“Male.”
“Great. So, two women and two men. Can you describe the men?”
“Um, they’re average, I guess. Aroldis is shorter and skinny. Rodney is tall and a little thicker. They’re um … I guess forty-something?”
“You guess?”
“Man, I don’t know. I don’t fucking card them.”
“Okay, so forty-something and average. What about on Wednesday? Working then?”
“Yeah, I was.”
“Wonderful. Who did you talk to on Wednesday?”
“Just Carter,” he said.
