“Sometimes it’s just too easy,” she said with a satisfied smile.
My blood boiled. I could feel myself itching to do something rash—like attack her. But that wasn’t me. That wasn’t how a sane person reacted. “Well, then I guess you got what you wanted.”
“When I have Seren back, I’ll have what I wanted.” She spun away from me and walked off.
I knew I wasn’t in Coopersville anymore.
I learned that the first day at Windham Prep.
But each day this horror show became more and more unbelievable. The kids here were crazy. And the lengths they’d go to get what they wanted were insane.
CHAPTER 32
Seren
“Why, Seren?” my mother pleaded from beside me in the backseat of her car.
I glanced to the front seat, making sure her driver wore his earbuds and his eyes were on the road. “He was running his mouth,” I said without looking at her.
“Do I need to get you back in counseling?” she asked as if she actually gave a damn about me.
“Nope. Alcohol works just fine.”
She groaned and, in the afternoon sunlight, her makeup couldn’t conceal the dark circles beneath her eyes. “Tell me what I need to do.”
“Nothing. You’ve done enough. I’m just biding my time until I’m away from this Godforsaken town and have my own life in Alabama.”
She crossed her arms and stared out the window. “You act like your childhood here was so terrible.”
“Only after dad died.”
“I tried the best I could. But that wasn’t good enough for you.”
I said nothing.
She turned back to look at me. “I love you, Seren.”
I scoffed.
“Laugh if you’d like, but it’s the truth. I love you, and I love your brothers. And I loved your father.”
I scoffed again, unable to stop myself.
“But I can only say that so much. And you’ll either believe me or you won’t.”
“Fine. I won’t.”
She shook her head. “Where did I go wrong with you?”
“Would you like the list?”
“That’s not fair,” she admonished.
“Neither is this life.”
“I’m calling Doctor Evans,” she said.
“You can call her all you want. Doesn’t mean I have to talk to her.”
