A black car pulled up, its lights shining on the driveway. Couldn’t Seren see the tears in my eyes? Couldn’t he see this was breaking my heart? “I’ve gotta go.”

He said nothing, just stared at me as if he didn’t even know me.

“I’ll send you some pictures of the dolphins,” I said, trying one last time to make him hear me.

“Don’t bother.” He spun away and walked into the house, slamming the door behind him.

Every part of me wanted to break down. Wanted to scream for help. Wanted to run after Seren. But I was stuck. I was alone. And I was terrified. One wrong move and everything could come crumbling down even more than it already was.

The driver stepped out of the car and approached me, grabbing my suitcase. He lifted it into the trunk as I pulled open the back door and slid inside, feeling utterly devastated. My world had imploded. I’d lost everyone I cared about in one fell swoop. And, not only had I lost them, I didn’t even know if I’d truly be able to protect them.

Tears fell as soon as I settled into my seat. I glanced up at Seren’s second-floor window. But the curtain didn’t flutter because he wasn’t there.

CHAPTER 38

One Month Later

“Catch the fucking ball!” I screamed as the receiver missed another easy pass. He was purposely trying to make me look bad. I was up for the starting position which meant his best friend Kenyon would be out of a job if I won the spot.

The offense regrouped and the offensive coordinator called in the play.

“Okay, boys,” I said in the huddle. “Red forty black.”

We clapped and the guys headed to their positions. I called hike and the ball was snapped to me. Before I could even find my target, the defense was on me, pummeling me into the grass. I slammed my hands down on the ground then jumped up. “What the fuck?”

“Sorry,” one of my linemen mumbled.

A few others laughed. These guys stuck together. I respected that. I would’ve done the same thing for Saint or Sawyer. But this was my future, and I wasn’t gonna let these mother fuckers screw it up for me.

“Have my fucking back!” I screamed at all of them.

“Grayson!” Coach called from the sideline.

I looked at him.

“Get over here!”

I huffed my frustration as Kenyon ran back out onto the field and took my spot. I’d been in Alabama for two weeks and just when I thought I’d proven myself, the rest of the team was hell-bent on making me look like shit. I jogged over to Coach.

He pointed to the metal sideline bench. “Sit your ass down!”

I sat, ripping off my helmet and slamming it down beside me. Alabama was hot as hell in the summer, and every part of my body dripped with sweat.

Coach crossed his arms and stared down at me. “Do you want to be here?”

“What?”

“Do you want to be here?” he repeated, annoyed at having to do so.

“Of course.”

“Then prove it.”

“My ass getting pummeled hasn’t proven it time after time?”

“If it’s not working, fix it.”
