“You can’t. He’s monitoring everything. I have a prepaid phone. But I couldn’t even use it to call you since he’s monitoring your phone. It’s been hell.”

He scrubbed his hands up and down his face. “I can’t even believe this.”

“I tried to warn you the night I left. I’m working with dolphins, Seren.Dolphins.”

“Goddamnit!” He began to pace in front of me. “I knew you wouldn’t leave like you did.”

“He could hear and see us in the driveway. I couldn’t say anything else. I wanted to tell you. I just didn’t know how to.”

He shook his head as if reeling from everything I was saying. “I was so fucking angry at you.”

“We need to help your mother.” Sobs tore out of me and there wasn’t a thing I could do to stop them. “It was so hard to leave you—especially since I didn’t know what was happening at the manor while I was gone. I’ve been terrified.”

Seren moved toward me and wrapped his arms around me, holding me tightly. “It’s okay, baby. You’re here now.”

I could barely catch my breath. I was home in his arms with his scent and body wrapped around me, but still so scared. “I’ve been so alone,” I choked out.

“You’ve got me,” he said.

I wanted so badly to believe that, but I’d seen firsthand that he’d moved on in Alabama.

We stood like that for a long time, both of us in our own heads.

“Seren?”

He dropped his arms at the sound of another girl’s voice, leaving me feeling bereft. He looked to the girl who’d been in his room.

“I’m gonna head home,” she said, her mouth turned down in a frown.

“I’ll let DJ know you waited for him,” Seren said.

She shrugged before looking at me. “Looks like it worked.” Her brows bounced before she walked away.

Seren pulled me back in his arms.

“So, you and her?” I asked, almost scared to let myself believe nothing was going on between the two of them.

“Nope.”

I relaxed in his arms, feeling safer than I ever imagined I could feel again. I didn’t want him to let me go. I needed him to protect me. And I needed him back in my life. The waterworks began again.

He pulled back and his eyes moved over my tear-soaked face. “What is it, Grace?”

“He threatened to poison you and my mom. I was so scared. So helpless.”

“Oh, Grace. I’m safe. And your mom’s safe. I can’t believe you’ve been carrying this all on your own.”

“It felt wrong to leave everyone with that monster, but if I didn’t, he would’ve hurt you. It was a no-win situation.”

He pressed his lips to my forehead, trying to reassure me. “We’re together now. We can stop him.”

“He’s got ears everywhere.”

I expected him to respond. But he didn’t. Instead, he lifted me up off the ground. I wrapped my legs around his hips and held on. “It’s one in the morning. You need to sleep, and I need to figure out who we can trust.”

“You can trust me.”

He looked me right in my eyes. “I should’ve known that.”
