She was quiet, holding a mug in one hand and the coffeepot in the other. My panda wanted me to apologize again or maybe show her how hard I was for her. But sometimes his ideas didn’t work that well…or were just not people friendly.

Finally, when I was considering throwing myself on the floor at her feet, she gave a nod. “All right. Maybe we should start fresh. I think we all got off on the wrong foot.”

Considering it was entirely our fault, she was being far too gracious, but I’d take it and see where it went from there. We served her the biggest stack of pancakes ever.

Chapter Fourteen

Livvy

I had to shield myself from the emotions that threatened to creep in. The way Justice and Sloan loved on their cub, a cub who was already embedded into my heart. The way I felt safe and protected even with the early shifting issue.

They would never let anything happen to me.

They would take care of me.

I sighed as I got out of bed.

Stop it, Liv. You are just a nanny. No matter what else was implied in their application.

My phone began ringing as I took off my clothes to get into the shower. It was Saturday, so Sloan and Justice would be taking care of Koby and his breakfast. I picked it up, not even looking at the ID.

“Hello?”

When I heard the voice on the other end, a chill shot through my body. Damn it. I should’ve changed my phone number.

“What do you want, Jason?”

At first, he was kind. Sweet, almost. He asked me how I was doing and mentioned that the alpha was looking for me. That’s when I knew he was lying and up to something. I had told the alpha that I was leaving the pride, and he’d wished me well and told me he hoped I found someone to be the mate I deserved.

I asked again, “What do you want?”

“Where are you living now? I miss you.”

I scoffed. Laughter poured from my mouth. “You have a wife, Jason.”

“So? I still miss you.”

“I’m sure she’d be pleased to know that you are calling me and telling me that.”

Movement in the background. “She wouldn’t know. I found out she’s been making up lies about being pregnant. I haven’t seen her in days.”

I shrugged but realized he couldn’t see me. “Either way, there’s no reason for you to be contacting me. I’m far away and never coming back.”

In a second, his entire tone changed. If I was in front of him, I was sure his posture would have stiffened, along with his lip curling up. “Where are you, Livvy? I know you miss me. We’re mates, remember? You can’t possibly think you could live without me.”

The fuck?

In hindsight, Jason always had a mean streak. He would call me chubby when we were fighting. I’d chalked it up to things people say when they are angry and tried to forget it.

Plus, I was blindly in love with him.

“I’m breathing so, clearly, I’m living, Jason.”

He growled over the phone. I pulled it away from my ear; it was that loud. “You belong to me. You think anyone else on this planet is going to want a chubby female like you? What are you doing? Working flipping burgers?”

I sighed and counted to ten, trying to calm myself. I had been looking at the floor while he spoke but, as my gaze lifted, I caught my reflection in the mirror. Here I was, in this new situation, having been blessed with an amazing opportunity, and I was entertaining this asshole’s bullshit.

Never again.
