Langston walked over to her and took a book from the shelf. “I try to keep up with the classics.” He flipped through the pages. “But I must admit, I haven’t had much time to read lately—even though I told my brothers I was writing a book.” He chuckled.

“What’s this book about?”

“It’s supposed to be a romance, but we’ll see.”

“Oooh, a romance. I’d love to read it when you’re finished.”

“Would you now?”

“Yes. In the meantime,” Lisa walked over to him and rested her hand on his shoulder. “Maybe we should take some time to read together.” She offered him a playful grin.

Langston’s gaze twinkled at the suggestion. “I’d like that.”

She roamed around the study, then settled into one of the chairs. “Are you sure you want me in this office? Where will you take care of business?”

“I have two others.”

She giggled heavily. “Of course you do.”

They stared at each other, lingering in silence.

“What are you thinking about, Langston?” Lisa asked, tilting her head to the side.

“I’m just admiring how beautiful you look in this light.”

She opened her mouth to respond when a chime from the computer caught their attention.

Langston strolled to stand over her, leaning and resting one hand on the desk while using the other to navigate the screen with the mouse.

His brows dipped as he opened the email.

“I feel like I’m about to read some top-secret message.”

Langston clicked to open the email, but a locked box popped up.

Enter your keypass.

He frowned.

“So it is a top-secret email,” she said. “I’ll leave you alone to check it out.”

“No, no. This is your space. I’ll check it in my office.”

He closed the email out, and concern washed over Lisa’s face. “Are you sure?”

Langston nodded; his eyes still fixed on the computer screen. “Yes, I need to take care of this privately.” His voice had grown serious. “But don’t worry, it’s nothing urgent.”

Langston headed toward the door. “Just promise me you’ll come back and read with me later,” she called out after him.

He turned and smiled. “I promise.” With that, he disappeared, leaving Lisa alone in his study.

In his office, Langston opened the email, and the prompt for the keypass was no longer there. He frowned.

“What are you up to?” he whispered. Whoever was on the other end of the email had gone through work to encrypt the message, but when the box to enter the keypass didn’t pop up, in its place, a message typed across his screen.

This video will self-destruct in twenty seconds.

Quickly, Langston tapped keys that would prompt his computer to screen-record. The video opened to three men on the screen. In the background, a gray cemented wall was behind them. They all wore face masks, and Langston knew immediately they were up to no good.
