He opened the door and went in, noting the IV and heart monitor beeping. Bandages peeked from the man’s hospital gown, where his chest had been wrapped. His leg was in a cast, his arm in a sling and bruises and scrapes marred his hands and face.

After knowing how he’d tormented the tenants in his building, Derrick found no sympathy for the lowlife.

He cut straight to the chase as he approached. “We have you dead to rights on illegally taping and stalking several residents in your apartment building. Other charges will follow.”

Coolidge’s eye was so swollen it was half shut. He said nothing.

“We confiscated the tapes and cameras in your apartment and know you’ve been doing this for years. Did you witness Amy Dean’s murder on tape?”

Coolidge released a heavy, defeated sigh. “No. But I can tell you something about that that night.”

Derrick maintained a cool expression. “We know who killed her. We found tapes of her murder done by the killer. We’ve already made an arrest and other perpetrators are dead.”

Coolidge’s eye twitched. “Those weirdos took that criminology class together.”

“I also know that,” Derrick said. “Tell me something I don’t know.”

The man’s bruised fingers curled around the sheets. “That teacher visited Amy Dean.”

“You mean Professor Pockley?”

Coolidge shook his head. “No, the chick.”

Surprise hit Derrick. “Dr. Dansen came to Amy’s apartment?”

Coolidge nodded. “The day Amy was murdered.”

CROOKED CREEK

Ellie refused to take serious painkillers, but she downed two aspirin with water. The doorbell rang, and she frowned.

She’d called her parents from the hospital to assure them she was okay, but knowing them, they’d rushed over to see for themselves. She was not in a mood to be hovered over.

Pasting on anI’m fineexpression, she walked to the door and checked the peephole. Not her parents.

Dr. Dansen.

Had she heard the news about the arrests? They needed to thank her for her help.

Ellie opened the door with a smile. “Dr. Dansen, I wasn’t expecting to see you.”

“I know, and I’m sorry for just dropping in,” she said as she followed Ellie into the living room. “But I saw the news last night and wanted to make sure you were okay.”

“I am,” Ellie said then gestured to the coffee pot. “Would you like some?”

“Sure,” Dr. Dansen said.

Ellie poured them both a cup and they seated themselves at the breakfast bar. Dr. Dansen glanced at Derrick’s open computer and Ellie quickly closed it.

“Do you have creamer?” she asked.

“Of course.” Ellie turned her back to get it from the fridge then carried it to the bar and set it in front of the woman.

“I still can’t believe some of my students conspired to commit all those murders.” She poured the creamer into her mug and stirred. “Who would have thought they’d get away with it all these years?”

“They were smart,” Ellie said. “Covering for each other.”
