Her voice sounded odd. Far away. Pleading. Full of tears.

The dark gave way to a light. He wanted to go to it. But she tugged at his hand and he felt himself jolt back to the emptiness.

“Stay with me,” Lola whispered against his ear. “I have something important to tell you.”

He didn’t understand. The light was fading. More darkness. Then Lola again, “Please, Cord.” His hand was being lifted. Pressed between hers.

“I’m pregnant, Cord,” she murmured. “I need you. And so does our baby.”

Cord felt his world rock. He was going to be a father?

The lights blinked erratically. The darkness sucked at him. The machines went crazy, beeping and chirping and whining. He searched for Ellie’s voice.

Instead, he heard Lola sobbing as she buried her head against his chest, and he disappeared into the black abyss.
