“Exactly!”

He smirks. “So you were simply standing up for a work colleague?”

“Well, if I’m not mistaken, you stepped forward too?”

“I did, but I’m also not in here this morning making googly eyes at her.”

I scrunch up my face. “What? I amnotmaking googly eyes at her.”

“Mm-hmm… look, man, I don’t care what you and Zoey do. I think you guys would be cute together. I’m all about the love these days, but I think you better either nip it in the bud if you’re not going to act on it, or you better come clean to Nash, so he knows the possible fallout.”

With those words hitting home, I glance past Lucas to Zoey sitting at her desk.

Possible fallout—as in Zoey and I don’t work out, and there’s tension in the office, or worse, one of us has to leave.

Yeah, that’s not something I can live with.

So, nip it in the bud it is.

“Nothing is going on. This job means too much to her and to me.”

Lucas leans over, gripping my shoulder. “Good choice, boss.”

I roll my eyes, letting out a long sigh. “You know you don’t have to call me that.”

Lucas chuckles. “I know, but sometimes I like to remind you, like right now, when there are tough choices to be made.”

“I hear you loud and clear. Now go do some fucking work.”

He smirks and turns for the door. “Yes, boss!” he replies with a salute and opens the door walking out, leaving my door open with a perfect view of the beautiful, voluptuous Zoey.

She’s on the phone, and as if on cue, she flicks her beautiful blonde hair over her shoulder in the dick-enticing way she does.

My cock jerks in my slacks again—this woman isso fucking perfect.

What I wouldn’t give to wrap my fingers through that hair and—

Fucking hell!

This is going to be harder than I thought.

CHAPTER FIVE

Blake

It’s been a long-ass day.

Trying to focus is always difficult when Zoey is out there looking so perfectly perfect. But I am the partial owner of this company, so I need to do my part in keeping it running. Which means, I have to actually work, not just sit at my desk ogling our staff.

Burying my head in an email from Dalton & Dunn Enterprises, one of our long-term clients, I start typing a reply email when I hear the elevator ding. Glancing at my calendar, I know there are no scheduled clients supposed to be coming in right now for anyone, so I glance toward Zoey’s office to see who’s approaching her, only to see it’s that fucking douchebag ex of hers.

Instantly, I curl my lip as Kyle steps up to her desk, his usual construction work gear on, looking like he is here to cause another damn issue for the poor girl.

Zoey stands from her desk, widening her eyes like she had no idea he would come in. “Kyle? What are you doing here?” Zoey asks under her breath, but I can hear everything she says because her office is right out the front of mine.

He leans down, pressing his elbow on the divider encasing her desk, and looks down at her. “About Friday night, I wanted to clear the air…”

Zoey stands and lets out a huff. “I’m at work, Kyle. We don’t need to do this hereorright now.”
