“What does that even mean?”

Letting out a long breath, I grimace. “I stepped up, wrapped my arm around her, and told Kyle that Zoey and I would attend his wedding together. That we’re a couple, purely to shove it in his face that she doesn’t need him in her life.”

Nash groans, rubbing his chin. “Blake… she’s the best asset this company has, and you’re meddling in her personal life. If this goes bad—”

“It won’t. It’s strictly a fake dating scenario to get back at Zoey’s ex until the asshole’s wedding is done and dusted, so she has some support for the day. Think of it as ‘friends supporting friends.’Nothing more.”

Nash leans back, his eyes firmly locked on mine. “This office has a strict no-relationship policy.”

“I’m aware, but like I said, it’s all fake, just for show. I promise, Nash, I won’t jeopardize Zoey’s position here.”

“Jesus Christ, Blake, I don’t like this. I’m just putting it out there that I think this will end badly, and it will be the company that loses.”

I stand taller. “I swear, Nash, I won’t let that happen.”

“Make sure you see that it doesn’t and that thisisonly fake dating. I don’t need this escalating into a situation we can’t control.”

“I have it handled. That’s why I’m going to Zoey’s tonight. We’re going to figure out all the details. We can’t let her go through this with Kyle alone, Nash. That guy’s a grade-A asshole. You’re with Brianna and Lucas is with Paisley, so I’m the only one here who can help her.”

Nash groans. “Fine! I agree we need to help her. She’s a part of our family, but I warn you—”

“You don’t need to warn me… I am fully aware of what’s at stake. It’s going to be fine. I will look after Zoey. As you said, she’s an asset, and we need her.”

Nash leans in, his eyes shifting to his computer. “All right, fuck off! I have work to do.”

I smirk and turn for the door. “Trust me, Nash. I got this.”

“Mm-hmm…”

Snorting out a laugh, I open his door and walk out, noticing Zoey watching my every move. I close Nash’s door behind me and step over to her.

“What did he say?” she asks.

“He’s okay with it as long as we keep this strictly professional.”

She swallows hard and nods. “Well, what else would it be?”

“Exactly. Just a friend helping another out, right?”

“Exactly,” she repeats.

Though, for some reason, it feels like we’re both lying right now.

So much fornipping this in the bud.

Her eyes meet mine, and my throat constricts as I stare at her. This woman is so fucking gorgeous that it does me in. How could a guy like Kyle let her slip through his fingers? Zoey is far too fucking good for a douche like him.

She quickly blinks and looks away from me, breaking our eye contact as she sits back on her chair. “Thank you again… for helping me. I don’t know what I have done to warrant such kindness from you, but I appreciate it.”

My shoulders slump, and I tilt my head. “Zoey, you deserve all the kindness in the world. Not the bullshit Kyle gives you.”

“Kyle is Kyle.” She exhales. “I honestly don’t know what we’ve gotten ourselves into, but if there was anyone I would want to try and pull something like this off with, it would be you.”

I can’t fight the smile that touches my lips. “Well, text me your address. I’ll bring the food, and we can figure out all the ins and outs together.”

She pulls out her cell and starts typing. A few seconds later, my phone beeps with an incoming text message.

“Okay, I’ll see you and Hailee after work.”
