We’ve been here for a few hours, had some dinner, and a lot of laughs.

Zoey has been working the room, keeping her distance from me all night.I don’t blame her.Nash obviously threw some gasoline onto the fire of her concerns about us. But Tahlee has lit a fire inside me. And especially after having the interaction with Kyle tonight, it has only cemented my feelings even more that I want to show Zoey thatthis, thatus, can work.

Somehow.

As the night draws to a close, I walk over to Zoey and lean in behind her as she sits next to Cam. “You wanna head off soon?” I whisper in her ear.

She glances back at me, then down at her watch, her eyes widening at the time. “Shit, yes. Kyle will be getting annoyed. Thank you.” She turns back to Cam. “Sorry to leave halfway through this conversation, Cam.” She smiles. “You know I love talking about the differences between Ryan Reynolds and Ryan Gosling, but child duties call.”

Cam waves his hand through the air. “Oh, honey, I understand. After helping raise Jackson for the important first year and a half of his life, I totally get what being a parent means.”

Paisley smirks, throwing a cold french fry at him. “You’re more like the uncle than a parent. You let him get away with far too much, Cam.”

“But I was there and am still an important figure in his life nonetheless, right?” he asks.

Paisley smiles. “Always.”

Zoey leans in, hugs Cam, and waves to Paisley. “It was good seeing you again, Paisley. I’m sure we’ll see you soon.”

“Oh yes, we have a baby shower and a bachelorette party to plan. So much to do,” she chimes excitedly.

I can’t help but want to stir the pot a little, so I look from Cam to Paisley. “And then she has to choose between the three of us on who will be the godparents and the maid of honor.”

Zoey widens her eyes at me as Paisley and Cam both gasp in some sort of shock-horror move, while I chuckle under my breath, knowing this will send the two of them spiraling. Me, on the other hand, I don’t give a shit about that stuff. But Paisley and Cam live for those honors.

“Brianna!” Paisley and Cam both call out, standing at the same time and rushing over to her.

“You’re evil,” Zoey states, standing and grabbing her purse.

Chuckling, I nod. “I know. It’s fun to watch, though.”

She shakes her head. “Okay, let’s go before Kyle storms in here again like he did last time.”

My skin crawls at the thought of that asshole making an appearance. “Yeah, we don’t want that.” I place my hand on the small of her back and lead her toward the stairs. “See ya later, everyone. Have a good night. Congrats again, Nash and Bri,” I call out.

Nash waves while Paisley and Cam are accosting Brianna.

I feel a touch of regret for sending them her way like that.

But only a smidgen.

I internally chuckle.

Zoey and I head out to the parking lot, and it’s clear she’s still tense from what Nash said. I don’t blame her. This beautiful woman has more at stake than I do. She has a kid to look after. There’s more on the line, and I’m being selfish by wanting to take things further with her.

But fuck it!

How do we know it’s going to end badly?

We don’t.

All I know is that I want to make her feel as alive as she makes me feel.

I move in to open the car door for her. She smiles and then slides in, still saying nothing. Craning my neck to the side, I shift around to my side and start the car, revving it a few times.

She pulls out her cell to obviously text Kyle and let him know we’re on our way. Then once she places her cell back in her bag, I take off at breakneck speed. She jerks back in her seat, her hand darting out and gripping my thigh for support. “Jesus, Blake!”
