Nodding, I agree. “I’ll come with you.”

We rush out the front door, checking up and down the path.

“Hailee!” I scream.Nothing. “Where is she, Blake?”

He shakes his head. “I don’t know. I shouldn’t have taken my eyes off her. I got distracted with adopting the cat, and the donation—”

“I got distracted too. This is on both of us. We just need to find her. Let’s go back inside,” I tell him, and we rush back into a woman standing by the front desk, her eyes sullen.

“Are you the parents?” she asks.

“Yes,” I reply, terror crossing her features.

“I heard the call cross the radio that a young girl was missing… a blonde girl?”

“That’s it, that’s her.”

The woman tenses, shaking her head. “About five minutes ago, I… I saw a man leaving with a young blonde girl.”

It’s like the world stops spinning and then implodes in on itself.

I stop breathing.

Literally.

Stop.

Breathing.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Zoey

Adrenaline surges through my system.

My heart races so hard that my chest hurts.

I can’t catch my breath.

The walls feel like they’re closing in on me.

Everything turns black while my entire body flushes red hot.

Or is it freezing cold?

I can’t tell.

All I know is that I can’t breathe as my hands claw at my chest, trying to help the oxygen enter my system.

“Zoey, Zoey… look at me!” Blake growls, grabbing my shoulders and forcing me to look at him.

His intense gold flecks glisten as they stare back at me, distracting me with the way they’re sparkling. I swear he has some kind of magic in those eyes as he breathes in and out, somehow making me follow his lead.

“Breathe, Zoey, breathe.”

I do as he says, slowly breathing in and out, trying to calm my panic attack as Blake nods. “You got this, Zoey. It’s going to be okay.”

Feeling myself calming down enough to be able to talk, I let out a sigh. “Blake,” is all I can manage.
