Good luck with your child’s custody case.

And good luck to Ensure Asset Management services moving forward with this type of deception behind them.

My eyes widen as I sink into the nearest chair, my heart beating so damn fast I feel like I can’t breathe. “Shit,” leaves my lips as a breathy whisper.

Nash lets out a heavy exhale. “What did I tell you about office romances, Blake? Even fake ones can have ramifications.”

Running my hand through my hair, I clear my throat. “This isn’t what it looks like, Nash. Zoey and I aren’t pretending at all. It’s real for us. It’s why I came in here this morning to talk to you, to tell you that I need you to push this rule to the side for us.”

Nash snorts out a laugh. “You think I can let this slide now, Blake? You’re ruining our reputation with this fake bullshit, and Zoey will have an even harder time with that prick ex of hers. I don’t know what to do here, Blake. I can’t fire you. You’re part owner, so… I have to fire Zoey?”

My eyes widen, my chest squeezing tight. “Fuck no! Zoey needs this job.”

“Then you better think of a way to improve your image… and fast. Because, as you saw when I arrived, we already have clients canceling on us.”

Standing, I start pacing. “So what? I need an image overhaul to make this company look better. Is that what you’re asking? How the hell am I going to do that?”

Nash glances from me out his glass windows to Zoey and exhales. “I don’t know. All I do know is they loved the family vibe Lucas and I are bringing to the company. Maybe you need to let this thing with Zoey go and find someone you can settle down with.”

A thought crosses my mind as I glance out at Zoey. “You’re right, and I think I know how I’m going to fix this.”

Nash stands, shaking his head. “Blake, don’t do anything stupid. Think this throu—”

“I’m finally thinking the clearest I have in weeks,” I interrupt.

I turn, grab the magazine, and head for the office door.

But as I open it, I see Kyle walking toward Zoey, with his face contorted like he’s enraged as he storms for Zoey’s desk.

Oh fuck.

Zoey

As I hang up the phone, I furrow my brows, wondering why on earth another client has canceled their meeting this week. That makes three this morning, and it’s not even nine thirty.

Something must be happening.

The ding of the elevator tells me someone is headed my way. I figure since Lucas isn’t in yet, it’s probably him, so I stand to greet him, but instead, I am met with the intense eyes of Kyle, waving around a magazine in his hands as he glares at me. “What the fuck do you think you’re playing at?”

He slams theBusiness Times Magazinedown on my desk as Blake steps out of Nash’s office, his face paling as he walks over to us.

I shake my head. “I-I don’t know what you’re talking abo—”

“The fuck you don’t!” Kyle yells, but Blake steps up next to Kyle.

“She hasn’t seen the article, Kyle. I’ve only just seen it myself,” Blake states matter-of-factly.

Kyle turns to Blake with a stern scowl. “You came tomywedding, pulling some fucking fake relationship stunt when you’re clearly only fuck buddies. You ruined the damn cake and destroyed half the gifts, not to mention leaving your fucking panties there for me to find, then left before saying anything to anyone about it? All because you were trying to appear like you were in a stable relationship in case I went after you for custody? Do you know howcrazythat sounds,Zoey?”

Widening my eyes, I can’t believe what I’m hearing. “What the hell makes you think that?” I snap.

He shoves the magazine across the table aggressively. “It’s all in there in black and damn white.Every sordid detail. My mother overheard the two of you talking about how you were fake dating. The only reason you’re doing this is to get at me, right?”

My eyes begin to water. “Barbara put an article about us in theBusiness Times Magazine?”

Kyle folds his arms across his chest. “She certainly talked to the reporter doing the article onEnsureabout you both. How else do you think they got the information and the picture?”

Blake’s hand closes into a fist as he turns and starts pacing. “No offense, Kyle, but your fucking mother doesn’t know what thehellshe’s talking about. She’s put my company and my relationship at risk.”
