Shit. You probably didn’t need to know about that.

Also, I think it’s time you learned that Mommy has a foul mouth. I’ll do my best to try and keep it clean, but sometimes those naughty words just slip right out.

Mommy.

Week 12

I’m tired.

I’ve been sleeping a lot while you guys keep growing.

I saw your daddy at his construction site today. He looked pretty handsome just like you guys will be (that’s assuming you’re boys, otherwise, I just know you’re going to be absolutely gorgeous little girls). The place Daddy is building looks like it’s going to be huge. I’ll show you guys when you arrive. You’ll be so proud of the amazing things he can do.

Mommy loves him very much, and I miss him too, but that’s our little secret.

Can you believe we’ve made it to 3 months already?

This time with you is going so fast. In a blink of an eye, I’ll have you both in my arms, struggling to figure out how to feed you at the same time. I swear, we’ve got some fun times ahead of us, but promise you’ll take it easy on me. Also, I did some research on babies who bite their mommy’s nipples while breastfeeding, and I’ve been having nightmares. Please don’t do that to me. I don’t think I could handle that kind of stress.

Though, speaking of stress. I watched a movie tonight that showed exactly how you guys are supposed to come out of me, and to be honest, I should not have watched it. It’s . . . gross. I think society is wanting me to boast about how beautiful and natural childbirth is, but they couldn’t be more wrong. There’s nothing natural about that! You’re going to come out all squishy and covered in slimy stuff, not to mention, if your head gets stuck down there, you’re gonna look like an alien. So let’s get this out of the way now . . . I’m not going to be a regular mommy, but I promise, I’m going to try my best. But if mommy looks a little frazzled, just smile and remind me how much you love me.

Anyway, I have another scan tomorrow, I’m so excited to see you. It’s a big one where they’re going to measure you both to make sure you’re growing just right. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Love you to the moon and back.

Mommy.

Chapter 21

CARTER

I should have fucking known.

Anger drums through my veins as I drive across town to the Wilder’s new build, first thing on a Friday morning because, surprise, surprise, the idiot’s wife decided she wants to make a few more fucking changes that can’t possibly wait until Monday.

For fuck’s sake. When Waters Construction received the formal approval to complete the Wilder build and hand over their keys, I should have known that wasn’t the last I’d be seeing of them.

I’ve never regretted a build, nor have I ever regretted taking on particular clients, but the Wilders are close to being my first. I’m lost in my thoughts as I take a shortcut through the city, trying to figure out what other changes Mrs. Wilder could possibly make, and the more I think about it, the more frustrated I become.

I’m busy fighting with the woman in my head, really giving her a piece of my mind, when a brunette steps off the curb, completely engrossed with the papers in her hand, and walks straight out into traffic.

My eyes widen as I slam on my brakes, the tires screeching across the road. I lay on the horn, the sound booming through the city as my grip tightens on the steering wheel, my stomach falling out of my ass.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Please don’t hit her.

The woman frets, her head whipping in my direction, her eyes wide and filled with fear, and the second her gaze locks on mine through the windshield, my whole fucking world crumbles with horror.

Brianna.

My truck continues screeching toward her, and I press on the brakes even harder, my foot all but slamming right through the bottom of the truck. Fear grips her, and she stands motionless in the middle of the road, not having enough time to react and lunge away. Instead, she wraps her arms around herself and hopes like hell that I can stop in time.

Fuck. If this truck touches even a single hair on her body, I’d never forgive myself.

The moment seems to go on forever, but in reality, it happens in the blink of an eye. My truck hurtles toward her, the horn still blaring through the street, when finally I come to a halt just inches away from her.

My chest rises and falls with wild gasps as I try to catch my breath, the relief pounding through my veins. My head falls forward, dropping onto the top of my steering wheel, feeling as though I could be sick.
