“I have no idea where Aidan would take her. Check the security footage, see if we can find anything.” Somehow I know Aidan is too smart to get caught by my cameras. But I have to try.

“Garcia and her men are on their way,” Clay says.

“Anything on Fernando?”

“His rental car is abandoned near Amber’s house. No sign of the police who’d been patrolling there, no sign of her mom. But someone found a guy unconscious. Neighbors said he’s Amber’s friend.”

It must be Jarrod. I exhale in pain. “Is he okay?”

“Yeah, a blow to the head but nothing serious.”

“Do we know what vehicle Fernando is using now?”

“We’re working on it.”

I hang up, run back to the house and grab my gun.

“Guard Matty,” I say to Clay, and then to Andre who seems to have recovered from his ordeal, “I don’t care what you have to do, but Matty is your life now. Understood?”

“Yes, Mr. Hartley.”

Then I turn to my other bodyguard. “Dave, go north, inland. I’ll get Joe to cover the coast. Stay in touch. I’m heading south. We need to find Amber-Rose. Whatever it takes, do you hear me?”

AMBER

“Where are we going?”

Aidan sighs in disgust. “Just do as I say.”

“So you hired another man to terrorize us? You couldn’t handle me yourself?”

He scoffs. “I don’t do dirty work.”

“Do you know he runs like a corgi?” I sneer at his choice of partner in crime.

Aidan guffaws. “Well, great description. But doyouknow he’s stolen over a hundred luxury cars in his life, and he’s never been caught?”

“And you believed him? Surely you’re not stupid enough to send your accomplice to a house guarded by the police.”

“No one is protecting your mama. No one will come to her rescue. That friend of yours…”

Jarrod!

“He’s useless.”

“What did you do to him?”

“I don’t know. Maybe we need to ask Fernando,” he says casually. “And as for the Santa Maria police, they had better things to do than to watch over an old woman. Something like… a bomb threat in Town Center?”

My teeth grit, my body shakes.

Aidan continues, “Macy’s will lose business for closing early today, but hey, tomorrow things will be back to normal and they’ll recoup their losses. On the other hand, you won’t be able to recoup yours if you keep acting stubborn. Your mother’s life is in my hands.”

“You bastard!” I shout at Aidan. I turn toward him, eyeing his gun, but he shakes his head.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” he says calmly.
