“Rob, you don’t know how she looked when Aidan cut her face into pieces.”

Oh, I know.

Amber-Rose was in my arms right after it happened.

“It’s the last thing I want to see—again.” I put my hands on her skinny shoulders. Paola tenses up. “Mama, I was the man who found Amber-Rose in Lake Geneva.”

Mama slaps her hands over her mouth. Then she hugs me. “Promise me you’ll get her back. My baby…”

“I’ll get Amber-Rose, your Amalia, back. I will.” I look at her with a reassuring gaze. “I’m your favorite son, right?”

She smiles, but then sighs, almost sobbing. “I can’t lose her.”

“Neither can I.”

Suddenly I receive an alert on my cell.

Amber-Rose wants to share her location with you.

“Come on!” I frantically tap on my phone to accept the request.

“What is it, Rob?”

“I got a signal from her.” She’s already in the water! “Mama, change of plans. You’re coming with me to Newport.”

She runs with me to my car.

“Strap up, Mama. We’re gonna drive like you’ve never been driven before.”

As I get ready to drive off, a call from an unknown number comes through.

“Rob Hartley,” I answer short and sharp, ready for it to be Aidan.

“Mr. Hartley, it’s Captain Clara Cloutier.”

“Captain?”

“I’m aware of your situation. The LAPD probably doesn’t want you to know this just yet. But my intelligence found that Aidan Rolland had ordered two new passports from a well-known identity crook in Spain. His new name is Robert Hart, and apparently he’ll be travelling with his wife, Angela Hart.

Low blow!

“Where are they going?”

“Costa Rica. Airports and ports around the West Coast have been alerted, and the US feds have told the authorities at Costa Rica,” the captain says. “But we don’t know how or when. It’s unlikely he’ll go by air. With the technology that you’ve got at Hartley Marine, I thought you might be able to do what the police can’t.”

“Thanks for the update, but I’m already ahead of you, Captain.”

“I’m counting on you, Mr. Hartley.”

“You trust me this time, huh?”

“I was simply protecting her then.”

I end the call and phone my ever-dependable brother. “Cancel Dave. Prep The Peregrine,” I tell him.

“What?”

“Prep The Peregrine. They’re already in the water.”
