“Should I remind you that Aidan might be in California?” I won’t let my ex rule my life, but I want Mama safe.

“I’m not afraid of thatstronzo!” Paola Scifoni shows her defiance as she helps me remove my hair rollers.

“I know, but I am. If you won’t let Jarrod stay, I won’t go.”

Mama purses her lips.

Earlier this afternoon I should’ve been worrying about which dress and shoes to wear, but all I could think about was making Rob a teddy bear. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough time, so I took Captain Beau from the shop—the Navy teddy that Rob seemed to be fond of—and sewed a couple of initials onto the bear’s sweater.

Rob and a sweater—always a perfect combination.

“You’ve decided what to wear?” Mama asks.

“Yeah. That one.” I point at my crimson slip dress, hanging with three other cocktail dresses.

“Favoloso.” Mama approves my choice.

Shirt and jeans, Rob said. Yeah, right!

I can’t remember the last time I had to put on an evening look, but tonight, despite him playing down the dress situation, I’ve got to look my best. My OkCupid days are officially over.

I carefully draw my eyebrows, thicker than usual.

“Are you excited?” Mama asks, shaking the curls at the ends of my hair.

More than excited. I’m bursting with anticipation over where this so-called party will take us. “Yeah,” I reply in moderation, moving on to my eyeliner.

“Just ‘yeah’?”

I paint a wing on my left eye. “I just want to be with Rob tonight.”

“Finally you admit it!” She gives me an it’s-about-time glance.

My cell buzzes right when I’m starting the wing on my right eye.

“It’s your Rob.” Mama passes me my cell.

My Rob.It’s nothing like a love song, but it makes my heart dance anyway.

I answer the call, and the man casually says, “Robby is on his way.”

Inviting as his voice may sound, the news brings me back to reality—the stress of party logistics. “What time is it?” I ask.

“Four.”

“You said five o’clock! I’m not ready!”

He chuckles, apparently enjoying my state of panic. “Let him wait.”

“I don’t like to make people wait.”

“He’ll be fine waiting for you.”

I pout as if Rob is in front of me. “Can you ask him to pick me up a bit later? Really, I only have one eye at the moment.”

This time the man laughs out loud.

I’m not going to let him get away with his amusement. I counter him, whispering, “And I’m still naked under my robe.” It’s time I wake up his senses.
