“Yesterday.”

“Yesterday? Why didn’t anyone tell me?” The news tears my gut apart. Rob’s voice… hewasin pain! He didn’t want to rant about his accident because he was putting me first. Why didn’t I think harder?Feelharder? I was too busy with my own problems!

“Long story.”

“Is he okay?”

“He’s okay.”

“How did it happen, Clay? Was he distracted? Was he tired?” I sigh. “It was my fault, wasn’t it?”

“No! Amber, it wasn’t your fault. It was his car. There was something wrong with the brakes.”

I feel my throat burning with acid. If it was my Nissan, I’d say it was just the car. But Rob’s Aston Martin? That car must’ve been well maintained. How could the brakes fail?

This was Aidan’s work. I know it.

“Please come? He’ll never ask you. He doesn’t want to admit that he needsyou. Desperately.”

“I’m on my way.” To hell with the California Spies and their article, I’ve got to get to Rob!

“Are you okay to drive, Amber?” Clay says guiltily. “I would pick you up, but I’m with Matty.”

“Of course. And don’t worry about the chopper, or Joe, or Pedro.”

“Thanks. Wyatt is with his daughter, she has—”

“Leukemia.”

“Ah, you knew?”

“Yeah. Is she okay?”

“She’s in the hospital. The doctors think the cancer has returned.”

“Oh, poor Wyatt,” I say.

“Joe and Pedro are driving some guests, and it’d take a while for them to get to you. But I can send one of them—”

“I’ll drive there, Clay. Don’t be silly.”

I end the call and rush to grab my keys.

“Che cos'è?” Mama asks, sensing a little panic in me.

I grimace. “Rob had an accident.”

“O…Mio…” Mama holds me.

I take short breaths. “It’shim. Aidan did it.”

“Go, Rosa.”

“I’ll get Jarrod to come over, okay?” I frantically text my delivery friend. This time Mama doesn’t make a fuss about it. “Call the police if anything happens. Okay? I can’t afford for Aidan to do anything to you.”

I check under my car for signs of leaks. I doubt Aidan would want me to end up road kill. If he wanted me dead, he would make my death more… elegant and satisfying. But I don’t trust him to be reasonable.

“Everything alright?” Jarrod says as he arrives.
