I read it with wide eyes, gulping at every sentence. She wantsthat? Never in a million years would I have guessed it! And the fact that she didn’t hesitate to put pen on paper to tell me—she’s gotta want it to come true. Pretty bad.

“Howdy!” Simon Blake knocks on my door.

I shove the letter inside my drawer, typing something into my laptop to cover up my increasing blood pressure. “Come in!”

Blake's bushy brows raise as soon as he sees me, and I know his nose is working keenly.

“What?” I glare at him.

“So, have you found forever love?” he asks in a neutral tone.

“You didn’t get a scoop on that?”

“You didn’t ask me to spy on you on your weekend outing. But, judging by your demeanor, I guess it went well?”

“It was great. That was why I called you.”

“So, you’ve found the one, yet you still wanted me to investigate her?”

“Don’t look at me like that, man.”

Experience has told me not to be complacent, but I felt a bit of remorse when I asked Blake to investigate Isabelle again.

Blake affirms, “I’ve got nothing else on her, Clay. She’s clean, apart from her interactions with Fletcher. Although he has been in and out of the country lately. The last time he was at her house was three weeks ago. There’s no sign of him planning anything against her or her son.”

Despite Isabelle’s rejection when I offered protection for her son, I did get Blake to keep an eye on Raffi. As reliable as he is, neither Isabelle nor Fletcher knew about it.

I lean back on my chair, hands behind my head. “You’re a one-woman man, Blake.”

“I was. There was nobody else but Flo.”

I motion for him to sit down. The man seems to want to move on this morning.

“Now I’m a no-woman man,” he mutters. “What do you want from me with that question?”

Blake never wants to talk about Flo.

“What’s your intuition on my choice this time?” I query.

“I know for a fact you’re not like me. But I admire you, Clayton. You’re still thinking with your head.”

“You’ve known me for how many years, Blake?”

“Nine.”

“How many women have you investigated for me?”

“A few.”

“Do you think she’s different?”

He leans forward. “Well, I thinkyou’redifferent. The fact that you fell for a woman who’s a nurse, a mother, and seemingly wanting nothing of you at first—that’s allyou.”

“I’m sure you’ve heard the results from the CIA about the last cyberattacks on Hartley Marine.”

Their investigation confirmed that the culprits were from China. A known organization, apparently. But they couldn’t find any connection to the Chinese developer associated with Fletcher.

“What about it?” Blake asks.
