“Here.” Christian tossed one at me. “Got it from your office.”

I grabbed it, dragging the blanket over his body until it was tucked under his chin. Grimm’s lids fluttered before he closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

“Shit,” Hyde swore. “Is he going to be okay?”

“Yes, I think so. It’s a combination of the excitement and whiskey,” I pointed out. “He’ll sleep for a little while and be okay.” I stood up slowly. “I’m done, so now what?” I asked, looking between the two of them.

“Now you wait,” Christian snapped. “If he wakes up, you don’t die.”

A shiver passed through my body. “I did what I could,” I said. “You need to let me go.”

“Not until he’s better.” Hyde shoved a cigarette between his teeth which he lit up. Smoke curled into the air. “We’ll let you leave when we’re on our way.”

My heart hammered in my chest. “No, I need to go,” I muttered, taking a few steps back. “I did what you asked. I need to leave!”

Lightning lit up the sky, bathing their faces in odd light. Together, they moved toward me. I shivered.

“I want to go.”

“You leave this church and I’ll fuck you up, Rev,” Christian said. “And Hyde will help.”

“Unfortunately he’s right.” Hyde blew smoke into the air. “No one can leave until we get out of here.”

I swallowed hard. They’re not going to let me out. I reached down and picked up the bottle of whiskey. Unscrewing the cap, I shoved it to my lips. One long, deep sip later and I tingled all over.

“I’m not going to be hurt here,” I said as I looked between the two of them. “Stay away and I’ll keep treating him. But if you come any closer…”

I trailed off, letting the threat hang in the air. The two of them exchanged looks that made my stomach turn.

Run. Come on, run!

My thoughts screamed at me, but I was rooted to the spot. Until they walked forward, breaking the spell. Turning on my heels, I did the only thing I could do.

I ran.

CHAPTER THREE

The only thought that ran through my mind was what if he died? No matter what I said, those two would kill me in an instant. I’d tried my best. My past life had prepared me well for bullet wounds, blood, and pain. But I also knew what men like them did if the person they cared about didn’t make it.

Every flash of lightning that lit up the church was a Godsend. It kept my path illuminated as my legs pumped. My lungs burned, but I couldn’t stop. I dug in harder, bypassing my office as I sought out the basement. Down there, it was more cramped. Two big men would have a harder time navigating than I would. And if I could wriggle out of one of the small windows, I could disappear into the woods and go for help. It would be a long, cold night but it was better than dying at the hands of a couple of criminals.

I tugged the basement door open. The old, heavy wood creaked so loudly I shushed it on instinct as if that would make it quiet down. Stumbling into the dark, I moved down the stairs as quickly as I could without tumbling down and breaking my neck. The heavy stomping of their boots above my head made me hurry it up. I stepped onto the cool, dirty floor and wished I still had my shoes.

“She can’t be too far,” Christian growled.

My heart hammered in my chest, filling my ears up with the sound until I couldn’t hear anything else. Lightning illuminated the windows. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! I raced over to them as the light faded again and I was thrown into complete and total darkness.

Every breath I took felt like it was going to be my last as I shoved my hands out in front of me and desperately tried to find something to touch, to ground myself. It was getting hard to breathe. I recognized the panic that tried to set in and fought against it.

Almost out of here.

My toe slammed into something hard. Pain shot through me, racing up my ankle and making my knee wobble. I went down hard, my right knee slamming into the ground as I yelled.

“Down here.”

I glanced over my shoulder. An arc of light cut my way and I jumped up. My knee throbbed making it hard to stay upright.

“Hey, don’t move.” Christian’s deep voice sent a shiver down my spine. “If you keep running away from me, I’m going to break your damn legs.”
