Instead of shaking it, I raise her fingers to my lips. A flush races up her neck when I kiss the tips, and she sucks in a breath as my tongue darts out to taste the lingering tears.

I can’t help my satisfied smirk.

She doesn’t protest when I pull her to stand with me. I shrug off my suit jacket and lift it between us. Reading my nonverbal command, she turns her back to me, letting me slip it on her.

Her lip is caught between her teeth again when she faces me and pulls the jacket tight around her. It dwarfs her figure, but the primal part of my brain doesn’t care, loving the fact that she’s wearing something of mine.

I step closer and she watches me intently as my thumb frees her bottom lip and draws a path of future kisses. My hand slips to her throat, my fingers stroking the sides of her neck as I bend to whisper in her ear.

“Get in the car, Kyra Dalton.”

CHAPTER TWO

DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND – THE RIGS

Kyra

Leo has a tattoo.

A viper that’s aching to sink its fangs into me if I get too close.

He was backlit outside the church, and my blurry eyes hadn’t been able to discern his features. But as we drive down the quiet streets, I’m afforded bright glimpses of my rescuer.

And the snake on the back of his hand has me entranced.

“Can I see the rest?” I ask

When he doesn’t respond, I look up to find him staring straight at me.

He strokes the backs of his fingers back and forth over his mouth, hiding the hint of a smile, and then reaches down for the cuff of his shirt.

My hands peek out from under the long sleeve of his jacket and a spark shoots through me when his fingers meet my skin as he drops a cufflink into my palm. The other soon follows, and I examine the elegantly engraved L and the companion C as he rolls up his sleeves.

The intricate art on his forearms draws me back. The snake’s body disappears under his wrist and coils around and around his arm, the lifelike scales moving eerily as his muscles tense under my scrutiny.

A strange weight settles in my stomach when I see the dark cross on his other arm. It’s long and thin, but no less pronounced against his olive skin. I instinctively reach for my crucifix, forgetting it’s not there.

“Do you have more?” I ask, needing a distraction.

He grins devilishly. “Yes.”

I blush when he doesn’t elaborate and his ice-blue eyes resume their sensual caress of my body.

“Food first,” he announces finally, directing his driver to a nearby drive-thru.

Leo leans over me and rolls down my window.

“What would you like?” he asks, turning so we’re nose to nose.

You, I think intoxicated by his heady cologne. This close, I get to examine his sharp jaw and rough stubble. I notice the hair that ends just below his ears isn’t black like I thought, the dark brown waves interspersed with lighter hues.

“Kyra?” he says, smirking when I drop my arm.

“Uh—double cheeseburger?”

He looks surprised but doesn’t hesitate, relaying my order—only mine—to the server.

We drive around the block aimlessly as he watches me eat, my cheeks hot with the attention. It doesn’t stop me devouring the burger. I haven’t had anything since lunch, so I’m halfway through the meal in no time.
