But then I’m reminded of how the day ended and the mixed signals have me spiraling. I just got used to his protectiveness, and yesterday I discovered he has a possessive, jealous streak he can’t control. I would think I imagined it, but when I search for the pink sleep set I washed the night before, it’s gone.

He removed every item Sutton had bought for me. Except for the robe.

I don’t tell him I’d rather wear what he picks, anyway. I definitely don’t share that I want him to dress me.

I’m certain that offer is off the table.

“I haven’t seen Leo at the club lately,” Sutton says as she drives us to work.

“He’s avoiding me,” I tell her.

He came to the club every night I worked for the first few weeks. Even after our awkward almost kiss. But two weeks ago he stopped, and I’ve spotted him a handful of times at Verus since, but he’s kept strictly to the casino lounge, refusing to venture into the club.

“Oh? I thought he liked watching you play? He still takes you to church every Sunday.”

“I think he feels obligated to after the first time,” I mutter. “And the club? Well, that’s more complicated.”

Sutton doesn’t respond, waiting for me to explain.

When the silence stretches more than a minute, I relent. “He said something two weeks ago at the club and now he won’t face me. On Sundays he pretends like nothing is wrong, but he barely speaks to me.”

The chasm that’s grown between us is a painful ache in my chest.

“Are you going to make me shake it out of you?” Sutton asks.

I sigh. His words have bounced around my head for thirteen days, so telling Sutton isn’t a big deal. And I’m too angry at him to be embarrassed.

“His exact words were, ‘the only thing better than watching you play would be if you were riding my cock while doing it.’”

Sutton tsks. “So, he ran away because he doesn’t have the balls to do it?”

“Do what?” I frown.

“Fuck you into the piano keys,” she says simply.

I choke on my own saliva. “I don’t think it’s that,” I say.

“It’s exactly that. But let’s hear it. Why do you think he’s avoiding you?”

I twist in my seat to face her. “I think it’s because of my age.”

She rolls her eyes. “That might have been a concern in the beginning, but he knows as well as we do that you fit perfectly in Verus.”

“Then maybe it’s my inexperience.”

At a red light she turns to me, brow raised. “Leo would love nothing more than to teach you. I know you know he’s a dom, but Leo’s all about his submissive’s pleasure, and he definitely wants you to be his. I bet he’s even thought about collaring you,” she says, pulling off casually at the green light like she didn’t just drop a bomb.

“Collaring me?” I murmur, a white-hot spark shooting through me.

“Mmhm. He collars all his subs.”

The warmth turns to cold jealousy when I think about the women he’s been with. The kisses he hasn’t refused.

“He’s different with you,” she says, her tone softening. “That’s why he won’t leap. He’s scared you’ll run.”

“I doubt that. I think he’s too much of a coward to tell me he doesn’t want me.” I shake my head. “I tried to kiss him a few weeks back and he pushed me away, practically fleeing from my lips.”

“Maybe there’s more to it. How do you explain the cowgirl comment, then?” she asks, putting the deliciously filthy image in my head again.
