“Who the fuck are you, then?” he spits.

“Leonardo Conti,” I respond, shoving my hand forward.

To his credit, Tyler doesn’t shrink back when he learns my name, when he hears I’m part of one of New York’s reigning mafia families.

“And if we’re talking vocation,” I say, eying Rebecca behind me, “I prefer enforcer…or assassin if you must. But thug and hit man are a little offensive, and dare I say politically incorrect, in this economy.”

Tyler laughs like the stupid idiot has a death wish.

Her father has the good sense to shut up and Rebecca’s eyes widen, but her stance is combative, much like the asshole in front of me.

“And what is it you do?” I ask politely.

Kyra’s mother steps up with a proud smile, as if he’s her child. Kyra’s parents didn’t even comment on their daughter’s beaten face, even though hers looks worse than Tyler’s little scratch. But that’s probably because Rebecca Dalton approves of the damage Tyler did. “Tyler is the executive accounts manager at Chambers & Gould,” Rebecca beams.

“An accounts manager,” I nod, pacing in front of him and tucking my hand into my pocket. “Impressive.”

I stop in front of him, blanking my expression.

“Not useful in this situation, unfortunately,” I say.

“What situation?” He raises an irritated brow.

My mouth opens, but Kyra whirls in front of me, punching her ex right in the nose.

He cries out, clutching his bloody face and a huge grin splits my face.

Tyler continues to moan and spit blood and I turn to Kyra in awe. “Just had to get the first shot in, hey, little girl?” I have no shame calling her that in front of them, and by the heated look in her eyes, she has no problem with it.

She shakes her hand out, wincing as she wiggles her fingers. “I wanted to make him bleed before you fucked him up for me.”

I wink at her and spin to Tyler, landing a solid hit to his jaw, exactly where he hit my girl. It sends him sprawling to the floor. My smile widens maniacally when I kick his broken, groaning form and spit on him from where I stand above him.

I click my fingers, admonishing myself. “That was thug-ish of me, wasn’t it? I couldn’t resist.”

Kyra laughs lightly at my antics.

“Ready to go, dolcezza?”

She nods and I easily scoop Tyler up, throw him over my shoulder and make for the front door. Kyra sticks calmly to my side and her parents rush after us.

I turn at the door, pulling out my gun and pointing it between Rebecca Dalton’s eyes. She gasps and clutches her husband’s hand.

“It would be unwise to follow us.” She opens her mouth to speak but clamps her lips shut when I cock the pistol. “Tyler and I are going to have a little chat. If you cause trouble, I’ll make sure he ends up right back on this doorstep in pieces.”

Before they can respond, Kyra slams the door shut in their faces.

I chuckle as we walk to the car, and I throw Tyler in the trunk. Kyra’s quiet as I drive us out of the city, but she’s wringing her hands most of the drive.

I place a hand on her thigh and she instantly relaxes, placing her warm palm atop mine. I smile and look back to the road. I can’t have her nervous with all the fun we’re about to have.

“Sure you don’t want me to kill him?” I ask, holding him back when he tries to lunge for her, taking his rage out on the reason he thinks he’s here.

At my words he freezes, gripping my wrists that restrain him by his jacket.

“It’s not too late,” I assure her.

She shakes her head, wearing a wicked little grin. “I get the feeling it would be a mess to cover up. But I’m not opposed to you breaking some bones.”
