CHAPTER ONE

PAYTON

With my hands behind my back and the cuffs cutting into my wrists, I marched up my sidewalk as the two cops flanked my sides. My parents were going to kill me. All of their attention had been on me ever since my older brother, Slade moved away and left for college with his girlfriend, Harley.

I kept my eyes trained on my boot clad feet as one officer rang my doorbell. If I ever saw the sun again, I’d be lucky after this.

“Mr. and Mrs. Rose?” Cop number two asked.

“Yes?” They both asked with apprehension in their voices.

“We found your daughter along with a group of other kids, destroying school property.”

He made it sound like I’d been ripping apart desks and breaking windows. We were only trying to give the school a facelift.

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my mom hang her head. It looked like I was quickly becoming the child they most likely wanted to disown.

My father let out a disappointed sigh as he took me in from my Doc Martin’s, up my black ripped jeans, and skintight tank top. “What have you done now?”

“She defaced the property, sir. The school has since decided she is no longer welcome as a student.”

My mom’s shoulders started to shake. “How can they do that without even meeting with us?”

“It’s their right,” Officer One answered her, toeing his boot in the crack in the sidewalk. At least he wasn’t enjoying this unlike his partner who was all too eager to drive me home and give my parents the bad news that I was in fact, how did he put it… a useless delinquent that needed off the streets.

“Are the cuffs really necessary?” My dad asked hoarsely.

“It was either deliver her here with them on, or take her down to the police station and file charges. This is Payton’s second strike in as many months. I suggest you reign in your daughter before she gets into real trouble you can’t get her out of.”

“Oh, you better believe we’re going to do something. We won’t tolerate her disobedience any longer.” My dad’s green eyes that matched my own, bore into mine, letting me know he was one thousand percent serious. “We’ll take it from here officers.”

It wasn’t like I enjoyed pissing my parents off. I didn’t. Not really, but I just wanted to have some fun. Was that so wrong? Ever since my brother left, it felt like something was missing in my life, and I was trying to find out what that was.

Officer One slipped in behind me as my parents and Officer Two looked at me with equally disappointed looks on their faces. I wasn’t sure what the cop’s problem was. He had never even met me before, but he acted like I had personally offended him with each word that came out of my mouth.
