THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER

THE DEVIL’S DAUGHTER

On the day I was born, rivers ran red, and the sky turned black.

It was a sign from God that true evil had entered the world. Someone with the power to make man abandon his faith.

I can’t say I believe in a higher power, but I do believe that we are what people make us.

They say I’m the Devil’s Daughter.

And that might just be the truth.

Regardless of who I am, I’m the monster they made.

And one day soon, I’ll be their reckoning.

CHAPTER ONE

“Consider the promise of Jesus in Matthew six,” the pastor preaches. “So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

I can feel the hard steel of several eyes on me from where I sit alone in the back pew of the church, and without lifting my head, I know each one of them is filled with disgust, hatred, and a hint of fear. I’ve never known anything different. From the moment I was born, I’ve been a curse imparted upon this town. I’ve carried the blame for every bad thing that has occurred here for the last nineteen years.

The year some unknown disease killed five of our town’s children

When the roof caved in on the town hall during Bible worship.

When the pastor’s wife miscarried at twenty-eight weeks.

The most recent blight, for which I am to blame, is the failure of our crops this year. The townsfolk have been in an uproar for weeks now, concern growing as the seasons change and the cold winter months encroach. Esteridge is a small, isolated, mostly self-sufficient town, miles from anywhere and surrounded by green countryside. We rely on our livestock and crops for sustenance, and with dwindling supplies and no way to replenish them, we are looking at a harsh winter with strict rations.

The pastor does his best to put the congregation’s fear at ease, telling them to pray for forgiveness and to prove their loyalty through worship.
