“I’m starving, let’s go!” I say.

As we head to the dining room, chitchatting over inane things, I notice heads turning our way like they often do when I’m with these guys. Girls smile and nudge each other, and look me up and down, wondering how I got to be the lucky bitch who gets to hang out with them. Some whisper discreetly, others not so discreetly, and if the guys are aware of their admirers, they don’t let on.

One even approaches us, asking whether we know what’s on the menu tonight.

Really? Can’t do better than that?

I have to say, however, I admire her initiative.

That’s when I get an idea.

That girl was going for what she wanted. She might not have gotten it, but she tried. She did it with a smile and friendly air, and when the guys shrugged and grunted their dunno’s, she kept smiling and bounded right back to her friends.

None the worse for the wear.

I can do that.

“Guys,” I say, leaning over our table once we’re settled in, “I… have some news to share.” I pop some mashed potato into my mouth to prolong the suspense.

They look at me with great interest.

“What’s that?” Matthew asks.

“Got my test back,” I chirp.

They lean a little closer.

I take a deep breath. “Got a C.”

The lump in my throat returns but I swallow that bitch right away. This is not the time to feel sorry for myself. I have business to take care of.

Sighing, John looks at his plate. The other two look away from me as well.

Yup. They think I’m a loser.

“Guys, guys, do not feel sorry for me. Hell, at least I didn’t get another D. This is an improvement,” I say with more cheer than I actually feel.

“Okay,” John says, moving around the food on his plate.

I hold my hands up. “It’s okay. I’m okay with it.”

Well, somewhat okay with it. But I have a plan.

“If… if you guys are on board, I’d like to double the tutoring sessions. In return, well, I’ll have to show you what I have to offer in return.”

Now they’re listening.

We return to the dorm without conversation, which is a bummer because I’m afraid someone will hear how loudly my heart is thumping in my chest.

I’ve messed around with guys before, not a lot, but I was never nervous. This time is different. These guys are headed off to learn how to provide spiritual guidance and save the souls of people who will be their flocks. They will baptize babies, marry young people, and conduct funerals.

They will also forgo pleasures of the flesh, if they’re true to their vows.

I want to make sure that when they’re living that life, they never forget about me.

And I, in return, will rot in hell. Happily.

I wait in the stairwell that exits to the men’s floor for the all-clear from John, who is lucky enough to have a room he doesn’t have to share. When the coast is clear, the guys wave me in, closing and locking the door behind us.
