He takes my hands and pulls me to my feet. “This is awesome, baby.”
It’s awesome?
And I’m baby?
“John and I can keep seeing you, do you understand? That is, if you want to see us,” he says.
Matthew waves his hands. “Hey now. I’m not completely out of the loop. In fact, I’m not out of the loop at all.”
Is he…? Does he mean…?
“We all like you. A lot. And we want to keep seeing you. Unless that’s not part of your plan,” Matthew says. “I know we started this as a kind of weird exchange for tutoring you, but, well, what can I say?”
He looks around at his friends for support.
“We’re not going anywhere, darlin’.”
Holy shit. My struggles of the past two days dissolve in an instant, and a gleeful giddiness fills me. I start to laugh. And I can’t stop. Like I’m cancelling the tears I wasted.
“What do you say, baby?” John asks.
“I thought… I mean… I figured…” Oh, fuck it. They don’t need to know how I nearly went off the deep end.
I flip my hair back and get all serious like the smartass that I am. “I’ll… have to get back to you. I mean, since you guys were headed off to God School, I’ve been thinking seriously about becoming a nun…”
Shock registers on their faces but when they see me break into a huge smile, they know I’m no sooner going to become a nun than we’ll discover the world is flat.
I had them going for a moment, though. And the looks on their faces were priceless.
Just like the looks on their faces next time we are all naked together.
Which will be about five minutes from now.
