She heard the ruffling of papers in the background. Was he searching for that fact?

“I’ve been transferred to Europe and will be working in our office in Brussels. I have no immediate plans to return to the United States once I’m there, so you can assure your client that he has nothing to worry about. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have work to do.”

Cath hung up calmly, really wanting to slam down the receiver.

How dare Trace get an attorney involved! She’d made no demands of him. She debated storming into his office to confront him, but knew that would do nothing but cause speculation and rumors to arise. Thus far the two of them had kept their relationship quiet and she’d just as soon see it continued that way.

By four-thirty Cath was tired. She gathered her things and told her secretary she was leaving for the day.

“Still feeling a bit wonky after the flu?” Peggy asked.

Cath almost confided the situation to her, but she did not want to make it known until the first trimester was safely passed.

“Just too much work after so many days off. You feeling okay?”

“I’m fine,” Peggy said with a wave.

Cath started toward the BART station, then changed her mind. Hailing a cab, she settled back to enjoy the ride home. Taking public transit made her more susceptible to any germs floating around. She needed to rethink her normal mode of transportation in the future and rely on taxis until she moved to Europe.

The next day Cath received another call from Ronald Franklin suggesting that his client and she meet to discuss the situation.

“I cannot make it any clearer,” she said. “I am making no demands on Trace Williams. I don’t see the need to get together to discuss anything.”

However, as soon as she hung up from talking to him, she called her friend Stephanie who worked in a large attorneys group. Cath had never needed an attorney before. She wanted her friend’s help to steer her into the right direction.

“Hey, what’s up?” Stephanie said when she recognized Cath’s voice.

“A small legal complication has arisen. I don’t want to go into details now. I’ll fill you in on everything as soon as I can. I need a good attorney.”

“Criminal case?” Stephanie asked, her manner at once professional.

“No, civil, I think.”

Or was it called family law? She wasn’t sure.

“I need a little more info so I’ll know which attorney to recommend,” Stephanie said.

Cath checked to make sure her door was still shut tightly then lowered her voice.

“It’s about a parental issue for an unborn child.”

“Whose?” Stephanie asked.

“Mine.”

There was stunned silence on the other end. Then Stephanie responded in a very professional tone.

“Jillian Stevens is our best attorney for Family Court. Shall I transfer your call to her now or give you her number so you can call at your convenience?”

Cath smiled. Her friend must have a million questions, yet kept her professionalism.

“Transfer me, please. And I promise, Steph, that as soon as I can, I’ll give you all the lowdown.”

Cath quickly made an appointment to visit Jillian Stevens that very afternoon. With the doctor’s appointment and now one for the attorney, she wasn’t going to get much work done today.

As soon as she’d hung up the phone, her secretary popped in and said she was wanted in the CEO’s office. Glancing at the clock Cath saw it was too early for the managers meeting. So was this a personal confrontation or strictly business?

She gathered the folder of the most recent activities and walked calmly to Trace’s office. Her heart beat double-time. She was nervous and wary. Ready to stand up for herself if the need arose, but hoping it was business. She didn’t want to dwell on the personal.
