“Trace?” she said, looking up at him.

He’d never seen such desolation.

“Yes, I’m right here. You’re going to be okay.”

He glanced at the EMTs as if for confirmation.

“Sooner we get her transported, sooner we’ll know for sure,” the woman said.

She reached over to connect the strap holding Cath onto the gurney. It was awkward since she was still curled into a ball.

“Trace, don’t let me lose our baby. I never thought I’d have a baby. I want ours so much.”

“I do, too, sweetheart. You hold on. We’ll get you to a doctor as quick as possible.”

“Thanks for getting me,” he said to John.

“Glad I was here to help. Scary situation, I don’t mind telling you.”

“Whatever you did was perfect. I think I broke land speed records getting here.”

He leaned over to brush the tears from her cheeks.

“Hold on, Cath. You’ll be all right, keep that thought.”

She gave an involuntary moan. “Thanks for coming. I’m scared.”

Trace wished he could take the pain.

“Me, too. But I’m here now, sweetheart.”

“Let’s go,” the EMT said snapping the stretcher up and beginning to roll it from the room.

“I want to go,” Trace said.

“Time is of the essence,” the woman said, walking along side, holding onto Cath as if offering comfort.

“You’ll have to follow, the inside’s too crowded and we need to be able to have space.”

“Where’s she going?” Trace asked.

“Mercy Hospital,” the man said as they hurried the stretcher toward the elevator.

Trace took time to thank John again and grab Cath’s purse. He reached the street just as the ambulance was pulling away. His car driver’s door was wide-open. Lucky no one had sheared it off. In seconds Trace began to follow the ambulance as it made its way to the nearest hospital.

Fortunately there was a parking spot near the emergency room door, which Trace pulled into. He almost ran to the emergency room lobby.

“Cath Norris was just brought in with a possible miscarriage.”

“She’s in exam room three. There’s a doctor in with her now,” the admitting clerk said. “If I could just have some information.”

“Later.”

Trace moved to cubicle three, pushed aside the curtain and stepped in.

“I’m the baby’s father. Is she going to be all right? She’s not going to lose the baby, is she?” he asked, going to Cath’s free side and reaching out to grasp her arm.

She looked pale, afraid. His heart clutched. He wished he could do something.
