Please, God, let the baby live. It means so much to her. More than anything.

It was forty-five interminable minutes later before the surgeon came out to the waiting room.

“Mr. Williams?” he said, coming directly to him.

Trace stood up, walking to meet the doctor.

“How’s Cath?” Trace asked.

“She’s doing well. She’s being taken to recovery and will be there maybe a half hour or so, until she regains consciousness. Then we’ll move her to a surgical ward on floor three. You can see her once she’s there.”

“And the baby?”

“Also doing well. We were able to also do some exploratory work, upon the request of her regular doctor. Things look better than first thought. I think she’ll be fine. Do you have any questions I can answer?”

“When will she be able to go home?”

“In a few days if everything goes well. I suggest you get something to eat and then go to the third floor. It’s almost midnight, but the cafeteria is open 24/7. Then you can see your wife.”

Trace shook the man’s hand, not correcting his impression.

He’d asked Cath twice to marry him.

Twice she refused.

The thought struck him that she was wrong. They belonged together. He’d been blind not to realize it before. Cynthia had done a number on him, but that was more than a decade ago.

He wasn’t the same kid who had married so rashly.

And Cath was nothing like Cynthia. She was a mature, successful woman who asked for little, but gave much. She gave him happiness and respite from the hectic business roller coaster.

For the first time in forever, Trace wanted to give back.

An hour later Trace stepped into the quiet room where Cath lay sleeping. The nurse had assured him she was doing as well as could be expected. She had regained consciousness in the recovery room, but once in the regular hospital bed had fallen asleep.

He stepped closer. Her eyes were still swollen from her tears. Her skin looked pale and tight across her bones.

He took her hand, holding it in his. Never wanting to let go.

Her eyelids fluttered and she opened them. Seeing him, she smiled slightly.

“I didn’t lose the baby,” she said.

“I know. How are you feeling?”

“Like I’m floating. The doctor said the meds he’s using won’t harm the baby. Otherwise I would have refused them.”

“They can do wonders now with medicine.”

Unable to stop himself, he brushed the hair back from her forehead and rested his against hers.

“I was so scared,” he said softly.

“Me, too. I thought for sure I was having a miscarriage. I’m not out of the woods, you know,” she said wistfully.

“I know. But they said things are looking better than expected. We’ll go through this together, sweetheart. We won’t lose our baby.”

She blinked back tears.
