“Somewhere better.”

“Where?”

“You’ll see.”

We walk out into the street like lovers off to the most spontaneous date ever—and maybe that’s where we’re headed. To spontaneity.

He leads me to his car, opening the passenger seat and making sure I don’t hit my head as I enter.

Carter gets in through the other side, and he helps me put on my seatbelt like I’m some child who needs assistance. I couldn’t resist because being close enough to smell his aloe vera shampoo is enough to make me swallow my tongue.

As Carter starts his car, I ask, “So, where are we going?”

He smiles at me excitedly. “To where we first met—Jefferson High.”

Chapter Ten

“We’realmostthere,”Cartertells me as he rolls down his car window to let the fresh air circulate inside the car.

Looking over, the sun is beginning to set because we’ve been driving for exactly fifty-three minutes now. Yes, I kept count—because what else am I supposed to do?

Tell Carter that we didn’t go to the same high school?Maybe. But he looks too excited, and I don’t want to ruin this moment for him.

He’s too nostalgic, and I don’t think I can watch his expression fall.

Not when we’ve just begun to get close.

So, I’m making a promise to myself right now that this will be the last time I’ll pretend I’m Estelle from Jefferson High. If I really want to get to know him better, the least I can do is be honest with him.

On our way home, I’ll tell him the truth.

Then, I’ll tell him I like him—and I want to take my time getting to know him.

Carter glances at me, his free hand stretched out of the rolled-down window. “What are you thinking about? Is something bothering you?”

“Hmm?” I come back from my drowning thoughts. “I was… I was just thinking about how I haven’t been here in years.”

He chuckles. “Well, I try my best to come here as much as I can. Some of my friends are still here. So are my grandparents.”

“Ah, that’s why.”

“Yeah, maybe we could visit them later.”

I laugh with hesitation, coming up with an excuse. “Not in my jogging gear.”

Carter glances at my body. “You still look pretty in those.”

I feel my face heat up as I blush. “You’re… you’re just saying that.”

He keeps a stern expression. “No, I mean it. I don’t lie—I literally teach my kids not to lie, so I practice what I preach.”

Looking out the window to hide my burning cheeks, I say, “Whatever.”

After a few minutes, Carter pulls over in front of a tall white and red building with red bricks and double stairs under the huge name:Jefferson High School.

Carter and I step out of the vehicle. He says, “Brings back memories, huh?”

The fact that I’m still lying about this is starting to make me uncomfortable. “Y-yeah. It sure does.”
