The entire circumstance looks odd and confusing to Larson, but he is no longer in a position to question the decisions I make. Hence, he lets me off the hook. As he should.

Putting his hands awkwardly into his jean pockets, he says, “Well, I wish you all the best, Estelle.”

Larson looks like he is about to hug me, so I extend my hand for a shake instead. “You too, Larson.”

Without a choice, he shakes my hand, clinging to me a second longer than necessary.

I pull away.

He glances at Carter one last time before getting inside his vehicle and driving off.

As soon as Larson is gone, I breathe. “Thank you, Carter. And… I’m sorry.”

Carter chuckles, standing next to me casually as if we haven’t ignored each other for days. “If you’re thankful and apologetic, would you like to go out on a date with me? Start over?”

I can’t help that my eyes sparkle at his words. I couldn’t have said it in a better way. So, I nod. “Yes.”

But then, my stupid brain decides to interject. “But what about the…”

Flowers…I almost blurt.

“The what?” Carter stops from circling toward the driver’s seat.

I shake my head as I put on the most convincing smile. “No, it’s nothing.”

I get inside the passenger seat of Carter’s car. As I put on my seatbelt, he says, “Oh, by the way, Estelle, I know you’ve been jogging every day at the kindergarten.”

The horror immediately rises to my face. “W-what?”

“I also know you followed me yesterday at the flower shop.”

My eyes almost pop out of their eyelids. “What?”

Carter’s grin only grows bigger as the color on my face drains with embarrassment. “In case you’re wondering, I visited my mom, so I got her flowers.”

With that, he puts a hand on the back of my head and pulls me forward so he can give me a kiss on the forehead. “It’s so hard not to like you, Estelle. Have I ever told you that?”

Epilogue

TwoYearsLater…

“Are you ready?” Clara barges into my room, carrying the freshly-made waterfall bouquet; elegantly drooping with roses, lilies, and dahlias. Just like I wanted.

My bridal bouquet.

But the bouquet can only distract me for two seconds, max.

The butterflies in my stomach are creating a tornado with my insides. I’m too nervous. Too anxious. Tootraumatized.I feel like I’ve been here before—well, almost.

I say in a strained voice,“Are you sure everything’s okay? Carter is still here at the resort?”

Clara laughs at me through her pink-tinted lips. “You do realize you can only cancel a wedding once in your lifetime, right? It’s like the rule of thumb in the universe.”

I try to laugh back at her remark, but I’m just too worried. “Did you at least check?”

Clara rolls her eyes as she approaches me and stares at me through the vanity mirror.

We stare back at each other lovingly. My maid of honor gently leans her chin on my bare shoulders. “I just came from the groom’s suite; Carter’s there, don’t worry. He’s assured me he isn’t going anywhere but to the altar, where he’ll be waiting for you.”
