“What do you eat in the morning. I didn’t make anything because I didn’t know.”

Kira shrugs. “Coffee.”

“Only coffee?” That was not healthy at all.

Kira looked down at her cup and took another sip. Her freckled cheeks turned a slight pink color. “I am not allowed to gain weight. I have to follow a diet.”

What the fuck? Anger bubbled inside of me. How much of her life did Aleksei control? “Well, you are allowed now,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “What do you want to eat?”

She thought about it for a second, and then her cheeks turned even pinker. I loved the sight. She had make-up when we first got her that covered her freckles. It was a felony to cover them up. They looked more gorgeous than anything I had ever seen in my entire life.

“Bacon sandwich,” she said shyly at the end. And added even more shy, “With cheese.”

I was ready to give her everything I had, and she acted like a bacon sandwich was too much to ask. I got up from the stool and went to the refrigerator. “You are lucky I have both bacon and cheese, but I can’t promise anything about my cooking skills.”

Kira giggled, and I started digging out the ingredients. I was not good at cooking, but I was also not too dumb to make a sandwich. I learned to make anything that I could do fast while my sister came to visit. She was a terrible cook and was always hungry.

After a few minutes of silence, Kira sighed, “Why are you doing this, Gabriele?”

For a second, I stopped to see if I was doing something wrong, but that was not it. Her voice was too weak for it to be that. I didn’t know how to answer. “Because breakfast is the most important meal of the day?”

She didn’t answer, so I turned back to her. Her eyes were sad. “Why are you treating me like I am not a captive?”

I turned back to the stove and put the slices of bacon on the pan. “Maybe I decided that you already had enough captive treatment.” It was not a lie. It was not the whole truth.

“Is this a guilt thing? Do you feel guilty because you are going to kill me?”

I am not going to kill you.“It is not that.”

“Then what?”

I turned back to her. “I want your help. If you help me, that will make this an agreement instead of captivity. I will provide you protection in exchange of information.”

“You can just torture me to get information.”

Yeah, like I could ever. A side of my mouth twitched at how oblivious she was. “Making a sandwich is easier than torturing someone.” I turned back to the stove.

“Okay,” she sighed. Then asked after a few seconds of silence. “You are still going to kill me at the end, right?”

My stomach turned. For some reason, I was hoping for her to forget. It was a stupid hope, but I still had it. There was no way she was going to be filled with the will to live just because I bought her coffee with milk or made her a sandwich. She was going to get it, though. She was going to get it when I was done with her. For now, I just needed to keep her alive. So, I simply lied, “Yes.”

She was silent, but I felt her nod. I kept preparing the sandwiches, but before I was done, she asked, “So, what do you want to know? Because he doesn’t tell me crucial things like the location of his secret hide-out or the password to his safes.”

I didn’t answer her until I was done with the sandwiches. When I put one in front of her and another in front of me, I spoke, “I am not interested in his hide-out or his money. I have more money than I need. I want to know your relationship.”

She squirmed uncomfortably. “I told you most of it last night.”

“I know, but I want to know how it is now. What is going to happen because you are gone? I took you knowing it was going to mess with him, but I want to know better. Is he going to drink much, is he going to avoid his other work, what is he going to do?”

Her brows came together in thought. She took a bite from her sandwich, and her serious expression was replaced by a satisfied one. She moaned happily. “This is so good.”

Well, her moaning was not very good for me, but I still couldn’t hold back my smile. “I’ll stock up on bacon.”

She nodded her head cheerfully. “That would be great.” She took another bite, and after swallowing, she rubbed her mouth with a napkin not very thoroughly. “Well, if we come to your answer, I exactly know what is going to happen. There is going to be chaos between him and his… friends? His inner circle?”

“Inner circle?”

She rolled her eyes, probably more to the fact that she couldn’t explain it very well. “Aleksei has three very close friends. The big names help Bratva to keep going, but his friends help Aleksei to keep going. They do all his dirty work, all the secret jobs. Now they are going to lose their reward, and things are going to get tense between them.”
