She deserved to be free.

She was going to give birth to our child, but the rest was only a blur.

“We still have to talk about this,” I said.

Kira shook her head and gave me a butterfly kiss on the lips. “Not now,” she whispered. “Please just give me today. Let us act like how we did before all this happened. Let us just be us for one last time.”

Maybe I should have argued, but I could never deny her anything. I didn’t even put on a fight. I only whispered, “Okay,” and kept cleaning her hair.

I gave us these last moments.

Chapter 18

Kira

Gabriele kept his promise. He didn’t say a word about the baby all day. I saw his eyes going to my belly a few times, but I could not blame him. I was too mesmerized by it too. There was life growing inside me, and it was our creation.

I had the fruit of all those sweet nights. It made me so happy.

I didn’t talk about it either, though. We were admiring our baby silently.

We had a nice breakfast together after the bath, even though the time was more fitting for lunch. Then we just hang out. We played poker. I had fun seeing Gabriele win. Then he wanted me to show him how I played cat’s cradle. We just had fun and chatted.

It was a simple day. My favorite kind.

After dinner, I filled a glass with water and went upstairs. Gabriele was taking a call on the terrace. He did leave a few times during the day to do that too. I didn’t mind. It was his job. Also, during the day, it gave me time to caress my belly, and now it gave me time to water my little flowers.

My forget-me-nots were staying on one of the shelves close to the door of the bedroom. It was a shady place, so it was good for the plant. It was also at eye level with me, so I remembered my mom every time I stepped inside the bedroom. It was nice.

Every time I watered it, my heart ached, thinking how Gabriele got this for me. It was not a very expensive plant, but he let me keep the memories of my mother with me. He let me have this thing that I lost.

I watered the flowers and then caressed the petals so softly. Sometimes I even felt like kissing them but never did.

“What are you doing, darling?”

I turned towards the familiar, warm voice and saw Gabriele on the threshold watching me. I put down the glass next to the pot. “I was watering my flowers.”

For a second, his eyes focused on the plant, and something dark appeared on his face. It didn’t stay long enough for me to ask, though. He gathered himself fast and got closer to me. “Can we talk?”

“I thought we were not.” I wanted the whole day.

“We should,” Gabriele said, and his face looked like he didn’t have any other option. He seemed too defeated. I could not look at him when he was like that.

I nodded and held his hand, pulling him inside. “Let’s talk then. What is it?” I sat down on the edge of our bed. It had seen too many things in the last two months. Thankfully most of them were good memories.

Gabriele sat next to me. I could feel some sadness radiating from him but not too much. It was too hard to read his real feelings. It was all mixed up.

“I have been doing some research about you. I was trying to find a nice thing to give you for after I was done revenging you.”

“You were?” I asked, a little surprised. He shouldn’t have. I was going to be dead. There was no point.

Gabriele answered my silent thoughts. “I never intended to kill you, Kira. It was a lie. I would apologize, but I am not sorry. I had to find a way to keep you alive when I showed you living can be good too.”

I was surprised but not too much. He never treated me as someone with a death sentence. Also, I knew he could never hurt me, so maybe believing that he was going to kill me was stupid. It was not too hard to accept, but the other part made me feel like I was lying on top of clouds. “You tried to make me live again?”

He nodded. “I did. You deserve to have a life you can love.”

“And you did give it to me,” I said softly. “The life with you is worth living.” I thought like that for a very long time but couldn’t show him because I was sure if I stayed alive, my life was going to be without Gabriele, and I could not live like that. Or at least not for real.
