“Nothing,” she said, her mouth stuffed with chocolate. “What do you want to talk about?”

I cleared my throat. It was best to just get into the subject. “I was in a meeting today. It was about an attack on one of our drug deliveries.” I could see the surprise on Priscilla’s face. I never told her about these things. I needed to make an exception just for this time. “It has been going on for a while. We haven’t been able to find who is behind it.”

I waited for her to ask me why I was telling her this. I expected her to react weirdly.

She didn’t.

Priscilla only put another chocolate in her mouth. “That is bad. Who do you suspect? The Russians?” She talked so easily. She seemed almost like she was enjoying this.

I hated to break it. “We did in the beginning, but it is a slim chance. The last delivery was a very well-kept secret. It is hard that the information got out. Someone might be behind it.”

“Oh, you think there is a rat?” Her eyes went huge. She looked scared. I knew she was more scared of those things after the attack.

I wanted to hug her and tell her it was no danger to her. I wanted to tell her I was going to keep her safe.

It was not about that, though.

At least I knew my question was going to erase all that fear.

“I wanted to ask you,” I started bracing myself as much as possible. “I just wanted to know if you possibly said something you shouldn’t to your brother or Kira?”

Priscilla’s hand played with her third piece of chocolate, and she looked up at me. Her brows came together in confusion, but just a second later, they widened with a fire in them. “You think Gabriele, did it?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“Fuck you!” Priscilla shouted. She never shouted at me like this, but I also never attacked her family. She was so very protective of them.

Could I even compete with them for her affection?

She hopped off the stall murmuring, “I can’t believe it.” It was like she wanted to be in a position where she could easily attack me when it was necessary. “You are in a truce! How can you think Gabriele can do that when I am in here?”

I cleared my throat. She was so angry. The best way was to be calm against her fire. “He might have thought it was a good idea since he knows I will not hurt you even if he breaks the truce.”

I thought maybe those words could soften her.

They didn’t.

“Gabriele doesn’t know that!” she said, throwing her hands in the air. The piece of chocolate fell to the floor from her hand. “No one fucking knows that, Antonio!”

I shook my head. I wanted this to end. It was obvious that she didn’t say anything. “Priscilla, I didn’t think it was very likely but just wanted to ask you if you let anything slip away.”

Her eyes filled with tears, and I wanted to kick myself. I was not expecting that.

“Slip away,” She murmured to herself. Then she looked up at me with so much hurt in her eyes. It made me yearn for her anger. “How can I even let anything slip away, Antonio? I don’t fucking know anything about your job.”

I knew that, but I never considered that might bother her. “Do you want to know?” I didn’t want to taint her with those.

Priscilla nodded. “I accepted so many things to be with you, Antonio. I know I cannot complain. I know it was all my choice. But you made promises to me. You promised to give me your trust. Now you cannot even give that to me.”

“Of course, I trust you,” I said, reaching for her. I needed to hold her. I could make it better if I could touch her.

Priscilla pulled back instantly. “No!” She shook her head. “I thought maybe you didn’t want to carry the darkness of your work more than you had to. I have tried to understand you. since the day we met, I have always tried to understand you. I fucking believed you. I believed everything you said, and you didn’t. Turns out I was just a stupid girl.”

Her words tore open my chest because I knew she was right. I knew I had never deserved her. I knew I brought her pain. I knew I was too selfish to keep her with me.

I stole her with sweet lies just for a sour life.

“I trust you, Priscilla,” I said again. There was nothing else I could say.
