I felt my vision turning black, but then the guy started screaming again. The last thing I saw was Apollo going for the man’s throat. The man was attacking him with the knife. My heart squeezed in my chest. I could no longer move, but I managed to murmur “Apollo” before tears welled in my eyes.

I only heard screams, cries, and barks. I tried to keep my eyes open, but it was so hard. Everything was dark or blurry or like a dream. I was not even sure if I was still alive or this was just a dream my dead body was having.

Then I took a deep breath.

No, I was able to take a deep breath.

I tried to open my eyes and saw that the man was not straddling me anymore. I saw a figure running away, limping, but it could very well be my imagination.

But I was free anyhow. I had to run. I had to go back to the house where I was safe. I had to, but I couldn’t. My limbs refused to move, and when they did, they hurt bad enough to make me scream.

I heard a small cry. It was Apollo’s cry. I would always recognize it.

I turned my head to the source despite the pain and opened my eyes. At least I was able to do that, but my vision was still not clear. Apollo licked my face, crying. My heart broke. I wished I could snuggle him. His blonde fur was full of blood. I wished I could just protect him from that man.

I also wished he could carry me to the house. He fought for me instead of running away, but I was going to die anyway. There was no chance of me carrying myself back to the house. I was already losing consciousness. I was not even close enough to the road for someone to see me. Trees were hiding my body perfectly.

There was only one way for me to live. It was a small hope, but it was also the only one.

I managed to lift my hand and then signed “go” to Apollo and then pointed in the direction of the house.

Then everything turned black.

Chapter 26

Antonio

I had the best night's sleep. After dealing with the Russian bullshit, I was extremely tired. Having great sex with Priscilla also helped. I could have stayed in that bed all day, but of course, the dog had to ruin it for me.

Every day we took the dog out together. I couldn’t get up when Priscilla left, but I got up a little after that. I didn’t show Priscilla around the lake, so I was not sure if she could walk the dog. I didn’t want him to piss so close to the house. I also knew Priscilla would want to have a morning run or at least a walk. I wanted to take her to one.

I wore my running shorts and a t-shirt before going downstairs. When I was moving to the backyard, I heard voices from the living room. Clara was watching a kid’s show on Alessio’s lap. He looked so fucking sleepy but was still not leaving his daughter alone.

I hoped to be a good father like my brother one day. I hoped it for a while, but for the first time, it brought a strange sensation to my stomach. After everything I have shared with Priscilla, after everything I have felt, the idea of having a child seemed like a deeper experience.

Now my whole reason was not just to produce an heir. I wanted to see Priscilla get bigger with my child inside her. I wanted to feel its kick. I wanted to have a blonde baby. I wanted one more Priscilla in my life.

One more perfect human being that is going to be mine.

A stupid smile spread to my face, but I managed to erase it before calling, “Good morning.” Smiling in front of my brother would only bring unnecessary questions.

Alessio opened his eyes, and his hold on Clara tightened. She answered with a good morning but didn’t even look my way.

Alessio shook his head. “You guys are a crazy couple. Why don’t you just let the dog free and sleep?”

I shrugged. “Priscilla has a deep emotional attachment to the dog. I can’t understand it very well either.”

He chuckled. “That is surprising.”

I didn’t care about his mocking. It was just casual, Alessio. Every single member of my family always mocked my lack of emotions and misunderstanding of human nature. Only one who didn’t was Priscilla.

“Did she take him to the backyard?” I asked. The property was very large, but it was the only option that made sense.

Alessio rubbed his red eyes. “I have no idea.”

“It’s okay. I’ll check.”

Just when I turned towards the doors that opened to the backyard, Clara spoke, “Prisy went running.”
