“Hi!” Elsie shouted with a laugh.

The sight almost made my heart stop. My little girl looked so happy, and Valerio’s grin was so huge that he looked like he won the lottery. From the background, I could tell they were in the private jet. Relief filled all of me.

“Hi, baby,” I said with a smile. “How are you?”

“Good,” she said, jumping up and down. “We are coming to Shako.”

That was probably her way of trying to say Chicago. I couldn’t help my laugh. “I cannot wait.”

“Me too.”

Valerio kissed the top of her head. “Peanut, I have some toys for you there. Would you like to see them while I talk to Luce?”

She nodded and jumped down from his lap, yelling, “See you.” Maybe I should have been a little heartbroken that toys took her attention away from me, but I liked seeing her carefree. A kid that age should be carefree.

As soon as Elsie went away, Valerio’s expression turned a bit more serious. “Hey, are you okay?”

“I should ask you that question.”

Bianca pushed my head with hers. “She is going crazy with worry for the past half hour, Val.”

I pushed her away. “I had the right to worry. Look how late he called me.”

“Sorry,” Val flinched. “Peanut wanted to pack all of her toys, so we were a little late. I wanted to make sure we took off without a problem before calling you. Thankfully nothing happened, though. We are out of your father’s territory.”

“Thank god.”

“Now you can stop worrying and start partying.”

I rolled my eyes. Honestly, it was impressive how he could even annoy me during this situation. “Yeah. I am definitely in the mood for a party.”

“Well, you should be,” he said and looked away. His face came a little closer to the camera. “I am going to make sure Elsie sleeps on the flight, and when we are there, she is going to have her welcome party. Everybody is excited to welcome her to the family.”

It didn’t sound bad but did he really want to do that today? “Do you want me to throw a party in a few hours?”

“Of course not, Kitty. I already told Priscilla to handle that. You just have to calm down and maybe put some ice under your eyes so you can look your best self when we attend.”

“Priscilla is preparing a party?”

He shrugged. “Yes. I didn’t want to bother you since I knew you were going to be too worried to do that but look, nothing happened.”

I couldn’t believe him. How the fuck did he always manage to be so positive. He made plans for a party without even knowing how things were going to go. “You are crazy,” I said.

“That I am,” Valerio accepted with a smile. “Now I have to put Peanut down to sleep so she won’t be tired at the party. See you there, okay?”

I couldn’t do anything but nod. “See you.”

The screen went black, and I just looked at it for a few seconds. I really couldn’t believe him. He risked going into my father’s territory to bring my daughter here without me asking him. Acted like it was the easiest thing and then threw a party for Elsie. He was so relaxed and unexpected.

He was exactly what I needed in my life.

“I love him so much.”

I realized a second too late I said that out loud. I thought about it for a while. There was no doubt in my mind, but I never said it out loud, and I definitely never said it to Valerio. I was not even sure if I was ready to really tell him. I didn’t think I ever said those words to anyone but Elsie.

My eyes widened, and I looked at Bianca. She had a shit-eating grin on her face. “Don’t you dare tell Valerio I said that.”

She put a hand over her heart, and despite her smile, she got a bit more serious. “Of course not. You should tell him yourself.”
