I was glad it didn’t exist in Chicago anymore. At least I wouldn’t have to attend any sheet gatherings as Valerio’s wife. I would really not like that.

Low whistles and laughs brought me back to reality, and I realized we were in the middle of the room, and everybody was looking at the stained sheets that two of my aunts held out. This was the point I was supposed to blush with embarrassment, but instead, I was burning with anger.

My eyes found my father's, and I saw that he was no different from me. He looked at me like I betrayed him by living. He also looked like he couldn’t quite believe what was happening. He really had no doubt that Valerio was going to kill me.

I felt my body move closer to him and tensed. Valerio was pushing me gently by the waist.

“You must be disgusted, Gino,” Valerio said in a calm voice, and I was glad because there was no way I could form words under my father’s gaze. “Seeing your own daughter’s bloody sheets? Ugh! I am glad we don’t do this anymore in Chicago.”

My father’s jaw flexed, and his eyes filled with murderous fire. “It is a tradition. We respect those in here.”

“Oh. I understand. I assume that’s why you are not gonna give me a “hurt her and die” speech about Luciana, right?” When my father’s eyebrows burrowed, he explained quickly. “You know, because of thetraditions, she no longer belongs to you. She belongs to me.”

Oh man, my father really looked ready to shoot someone. I knew this pushing was necessary. Valerio wanted to do this, but despite my sting tongue, I was never able to do something this dangerous. I always wanted to be fearless and independent. I wanted to be able to do anything, but I didn’t have the power for this shit, so it scared me.

Valerio had all the power I ever wanted.

So my father didn’t shoot him. He just looked at him like he was a piece of shit and murmured, “I will not give you a talk, Vasile.”

That’s when Valerio’s hand came to my hip possessively, and I felt his whole body flex. Even his whole aura changed as he leaned down a bit toward my father and whispered in a low voice. “But I will, Borelli. Don’t ever forget that she is mine now. She is my wife, and if you ever hurt a single hair on her head, I will fucking slaughter you and burn down your city. If you ever forget she is a Vasile, your whole territory will see why they call me the Monster.”

Oh.

My.

God.

I looked at Valerio with huge eyes. I couldn’t even see my father’s face. I was amazed. I knew he had to say those words to put him in his place. I knew it was part of the plan, but he still said it anyhow.

I wished I could beat my father on my own, but I didn’t mind Valerio’s presence. Having someone defend me felt good. He had all the power I wanted and was sharing it with me.

We were truly partners now.

I looked around when he pulled me away from my father and to our breakfast table. All the traditionalist shits were laughing and celebrating. Valerio’s family looked tense, and the women at their table actually seemed angry at the situation. My father looked ready to blow, but he couldn’t. He was too afraid. Valerio put the same fear I felt in him.

I looked at my new husband, and he seemed the most attractive he ever did. I couldn’t remember any of my vows to myself. I would go back to being the cold bitch later. At this moment, I wanted Valerio. I wanted him to be my rock. I wanted him to slaughter all my enemies.

I put my hand on his knee, and when he looked at me, I asked, “Do you want to shock them more?”

“Always,” he answered without a beat.

I smiled, and I jumped on him the next moment, covering his mouth with mine. Valerio’s hands immediately came to my ass, and I kissed him with all my might. I wanted to give everyone something so they could keep calling slut behind my back, but I also wanted them to know if anyone heard them, they were going to die because now the slut actually had power.

Marrying Valerio Vasile was probably the best decision I made.

My good mood completely disappeared when I was hugging Elsie at the airport. I tried so hard not to cry because she was already crying. I had already promised myself one day I would save her from this hellhole. I just had to be patient.

It wasn’t easy, though.

I just wanted to grab her and run for the plane, but I knew my father would never give her to me. He knew Valerio was at my side. He knew he couldn’t touch me so easily anymore. The only thing he could hold over my head was Elsie, and it scared me shitless.

I pulled back from the hug and wiped her small cheeks. “Don’t cry, baby. I promise I will call you every day.”

She pouted. Her tears didn’t stop. It tore me open to leave her like this, but if I had stayed here, I wouldn’t have any power. I had to do this for us.

“I promise I will be back,” I said. I wanted to tell her we were going to reunite one day. I wanted to promise I was going to bring her to Chicago, but my father was too close. I also didn’t know how Valerio would react to that. He helped me well until this part of the plan, but I was not done. I needed more.

I needed Elsie with me.
