“Sorry,” he murmured. “Mia captured me to cook for her. I am actually surprised you are alone. How they didn’t hoard around you.”

“I tried,” a high-pitched voice said, joining us, and I came face to face with two young women who also had been Valerio’s groomsmen. “Verona didn’t let me,” added the short-haired one.

“Now, why would you do that, Verona?” Valerio asked.

Verona shrugged. “She looked peaceful alone.” She had pale blonde hair and blue eyes. If I was a cold bitch, Verona was an ice queen. She looked extremely intimidating and beautiful. I would never guess she was Valerio’s twin sister.

“I guess we know who is the sensible twin,” I said, even though I was not peaceful until Valerio returned to my side.

The girl with the short hair, whom I knew as Valerio’s best friend but couldn’t remember the name of, nudged Valerio with her hips. “Fun is better than sensible.”

Valerio nodded with a smile, but Verona’s eyebrows raised. “Really?”

The short-haired girl’s smile dimmed for a moment, but then I realized it just became softer as she looked at her. “I am just joking.”

Valerio watched the two with amusement for just a second and then turned to me. “Luce, you know Verona and Bianca from the wedding. Shamefully you guys didn’t have the opportunity to spend much time together.”

I smiled nervously. I was good at being polite at events, but these two women were close to my age, and they meant a lot to Valerio. I didn’t know how to act. I was not the best at making friends. “Wedding time is a stressful time.”

“It is okay,” Bianca said, not showing an ounce of the rigidness I had. Verona was more on the quieter side, but Bianca seemed a lot like Valerio. “We have so much time now. It is impossible to stay away from us when you are married to Valerio.”

“My heart will shatter if I don’t see Bianca for more than a few days.”

Okay, now I was even more nervous. I looked at them, looking at each other. Valerio told me Bianca was his best friend, and even though I found it weird, I didn’t think much about it. Now though, I was. Bianca was the only one here that was not part of the family. She was truly special to Valerio.

We decided to be honest, but I never asked about Bianca. Maybe their friendship was a different kind of friendship. They seemed so comfortable with each other. I wondered if they had ever slept together, and jealousy filled me. I knew it was stupid, but I couldn’t control it. He told me I was his wife for real. He made me feel so special and cared for. Finding out there was another person who was more special than me, in the same way, would hurt me.

It shouldn’t have hurt me, but I knew it would.

I hated the idea of something not platonic going on between them.

“You guys are really close,” I said with a calm expression. At least I was good at hiding my emotions.

“Bestest of friends,” Bianca said, wrapping an arm around Valerio’s shoulders at a weird angle because of their height difference. “When I started my career Val here let me practice my tattoos on him. It cannot get better than that.”

I looked at his arms. Valerio did have a lot of tattoos, and I honestly found them really hot. However, all I could see now was Bianca stamping him as hers.

Maybe Valerio’s words and actions really didn’t mean anything other than usual kindness.

“You tattooed him,” I said with a smile. I knew it was strained, but I just hoped my hurt and jealousy were not too obvious.

“I did all of his tattoos,” she said proudly.

Valerio added, “That’s why they are all amazing.”

Oh yeah, amazing, like Bianca.

Verona looked bored, but her lips twitched as she said, “You also gave him a piercing.”

Valerio laughed, but Bianca looked a little panicked and blushed. “Verona, we don’t mention that incident. It was a dare.”

I was a bit intrigued. I didn’t want to hear more of their close relationship, but Bianca’s expression told me there was something worth digging into there. She didn’t want to talk about it, so I had to know what had happened.

“Did you mess up?” I asked, half hoping she did, and she was not so perfect.

Valerio was the one who answered me, “Thank god she didn’t.”

Two women laughed a little too weirdly, and I was only more curious. “So, what happened? Was it your nipple piercing?” Valerio didn’t have any metal on his face. He had one ear pierced, but I felt like a nipple piercing story would be funnier than an ear-piercing one. Their reaction matched it.
