“Val!” she screeched and then showed the camera her black cat plushie. She loved that damn thing so much, just like she loved Valerio. He was really irresistible.

Oh, no wrong thought.Abort.

I focused on Elsie’s small face. “How are you, baby?”

Her features turned sad. “I miss you.”

“I miss you too.”

We stayed silent for a little too long, and Valerio jumped in. “Hey, Peanut, I promise we will visit soon, okay?”

I looked up at him with wide eyes. This was the first time he said such a thing, and lying to Elsie was not a good thing. She might be young, but she never forgot a damn thing.

“Really?” she jumped in my mom’s lap. “When? When? When?”

I rolled my eyes at Valerio. “Thanks for that,” I whispered.

“Sorry,” he said.

“I think you should go,” I said while my mother was trying to calm Elsie’s questions.

Valerio nodded in agreement. It was a rare sight. His eyes went to the screen for a second, and then he quickly kissed my lips and pulled back. “I am going to stretch until you are done.”

“Okay,” I said, dumbfounded.

We kissed. We didn’t do it a lot, but we did. We kissed during our “orgasm fights” sometimes, but those were different. They were rough and usually very angry kisses. This was Valerio’s public version of a kiss. When we were in front of other people, he kissed me like that. Sometimes it went on longer, but it was always soft, and it always left me a little stupid.

I knew he did it for appearances. This time he did it to fool my mother into thinking he was a loving husband. Those kisses were not real, but apparently, my stupid heart had a hard time understanding that.

After Valerio left, my mother’s voice got my attention back to the screen. “Is he good to you, mija?”

Valerio used fake kisses to fool my mother, but I didn’t need to fool her. So, I just told her the truth, “Better than anyone has ever been.”

Chapter 22

Valerio

“I hope this will be as good as Antonio’s since we passed up on them,” I said, filling the cups with the spicy noodle soup. The last time Antonio cooked it, Luce really liked it, so I got the recipe from him. They actually invited us over tonight, but Luce made up an excuse about her classes and stuff.

In reality, I knew she had avoided their house. She liked Antonio and Priscilla, but she didn’t want to step foot into their house. At first, I didn’t get it, but then they brought their dogs to a meeting at Alessio and Isabella’s house.

My ice queen wife was scared of dogs. I did my best not to make fun of her about it since it seemed serious. She tried to hide it but looked terrified when she saw the dogs for the first time. We needed to deal with that problem sometime, but not now. I didn’t want to make her feel vulnerable. We were already kind of on thin ice.

Luce gave me an icy smile as I put down the bowl in front of her. “Aww, I am sure it won’t be.”

She was so adamant about never complimenting me. I didn’t need praise anyway. I could read her reactions well.

I sat down and started eating my own soup. “You can’t know until you try it, wife.”

She rolled her eyes and started eating. Her brown eyes widened a bit, and her chest moved up and down. I could even see the slight movement of her shoulders. She really liked the soup, but she was not going to admit it.

I actually liked when she challenged me even for the smallest things. It kept me entertained.

Luce was always cold towards me, but I didn’t take it personally because she was cold towards everyone except her cats and her sister.

My wife also liked staying at home. Because of the manner we met, I always thought she was more of a party girl. In the last month we have been married we only went out to party once. Other than her classes, she only left the house when I forced her to. She seemed content staying at home with the cats. She liked the peace, and I was actually proud to be able to provide it for her.

Still, I made her go out with me. I wanted us to spend time together. First, I made her work out with me at the gym because that was the first thing that came to my mind, but then it became a habit. Luce hated working out, or at least she said she hated it. Maybe even she believed that, but I knew it was not true. She was getting better day by day, and that achievement was making her happy. Also, she wasn’t so cold when I praised her as we worked out.
